Mariager is situated on the south shore of Mariager Fjord in Jutland. This charming town, dating from the early 1400's, is known as the "City of Roses". This is very evident as you stroll its cobblestone streets. There are several things of interest that you must see while visiting, the Mariager Saltcenter is one of them. The Center features a museum where you can learn about salt and can also see the "largest collection of salt vessels in the World", 2268 of them we are told! You can also tour a simulated salt mine and take a virtual ride on an elevator descending to its depths. Afterwards you can visit the Saltshoppen where you can purchase some famous Mariager Salt or other salt connected wares. If you have the time and are in need of some relaxing therapy, you can take a dip in the "Dead Sea", a pool with a high salt content and heated to a warm temperature of 37 degrees. There is also a cafe on site, Cafe Saltbossen, where you can enjoy a snack or lunch out on their terrace overlooking the fjord. And I almost forgot, there is a working exhibit outside where you can witness the process(es) from which the salt is extracted. The Saltcenter is a worthwhile visit. Check out their website for cost of admission and for opening hours. Of course, you may not want to visit Mariager just to see the Saltcenter, this is a very "hyggelig" town with many lovely things to see. You most definitely should visit the Mariager Abbey Church. The church originally dates from the early 1400's, but after the reformation, it became less relevant and subsequently fell into disrepair. It was partially demolished in 1788 and rebuilt to its present size. Once one of the largest churches in Denmark, it was reduced to 1/4 of its original size. Don't let this discourage you from a visit, the present building is still magnificent, both inside and outside, and is set in a wonderful location, surrounded by a beautiful church yard. There is a good writeup on the church on Wikipedia. This is a good example of what once was and offers you a good lesson into the history surrounding the area. You are also close to the town square, which is certainly worth while to wander around in. The well preserved buildings covered in rose bushes certainly help the city to live up to its nickname. There are other notable things to see around the town and the area as well, unfortunately one we didn't get to, was Hohøj. The Hohøj is one of Scandinavia's largest burial mounds, 12 metres high and about 72 metres in diameter at the base. It is known for being one of Jutland's highest points, offering great views of the surrounding area, as well as for its historical value. The Mariager Fjord is a beautiful part of Jutland with many natural and historical places to visit. Needless to say, a return visit is due for next year!

Thought this place would have more to offer. The casual visitor will be disappointed. To learn about salt, one should go to Læsø. Professional and worth the money. Here you get nothing for 90 DKK. Pool is tiny and primitive. Friendly staff, but not much else.

The museum itself is terribly outdated, it feels like it was last updated in the 80s. The chemistry stands where you can try something out, like separating salt from pepper in a blend are dirty and unusable because previous visitors messed things up. The mine and "adventurous" ride are enjoyable only because of how clumsily they were made. The salt bath, finally, was painful both for me and my daughter (We saw another little girl walk out crying after only a minute or so)... too salty for our private parts, let's say. All in all: waste of out time and money. I would never have come here had I known. Tourist trap!

Over the years I have seen/worked in various salt production facilities-- including mining, evaporation of sea water, etc. But the approach used in Mariager and environs is nothing short of amazing- when views from a "Creative Perspective"! About 5 kms (3 miles) from Mariager there is a "huge salt rock"-- measuring about 60 cubic meters -- at current use it will last another 21,000 years!!
Small amounts of the "rock salt" are disloved in water and transported by pipeline to the facility and interesting displays located on Mariager's port. There heat removes the water- thereby producing salt. The facility- opened about 20 years ago- has many displays, tells a story about salt production and also displays many salt based products (which are available for purchase). There is also a warm "salt water pool" which may produce health benefits. The associated restaurant serves "pleasant food"!

I hope that this Review has been helpful!

This was a really interesting and fun visit. There is a lot of information in the museum and you should take the time to read all the details. We learned a lot about the history of salt - something we take for granted and expect to be cheep. Wars were fought over salt.
Make sure you end your visit with a dip in the salty pool. It is awesome. Bring your own bathing suit and towels - if not you can rent at the center.

We did not try the restaurant but rather took a walk in the beautiful small town.

Parking is available at the salt center and you can walk to the center of Mariager.

Plan 2-3 hours for your visit

My partner and myself had stayed overnight in Mariager. We visited the Saltcenter and spent a few hours walking through the museum, this included a 4D audio visual experience. We finished our visit taking a dip in the hot salt pool, this was an invigorating experience which I would happily return for another visit. If you're not interested in the history of salt I would still recommend the salt pool. The Cafe was very good too.

The center is small and it is easy to get around. The little mine is very cool for the kids. There are different games and small activity for the kids. You can buy a huge variety of salts and other products. There are a little restaurant but it is a little pricey.
You can swim in a salt pool.

Enjoy the Saltcenter and the exhibition about salt and history, but the most extraordinary experience is the salted pool. You can enjoy and relax in the poolwater with 30% salt at 38-40 degree celcius. It's good for your skin in several ways, but might irritate scratches.

Having spent around a week travelling around southern Sweden and Denmark this is the worst 'museum' we visited. It looked good on paper before going but i suggest you miss this one for you itinerary. There are a few interesting cabinet displays and you can learn a little about salt production through the ages but a high price for not a lot.

Do visit Mariager though as it is on a pleasant fjord and the cafe (attached to the museum) serves good food and drinks.

It's was an interesting place to visit to hear more about Salt how it is expanded from various places and the history of it. There is a nice museum and some interesting videos, i read earlier reviews stating that the museum was outdated, i don't agree about that, many museums are the same way as this. We also visited the bath. It was a nice visit, but don't go for the bath alone. The price is around 13 euro and that is an ok price, if you see all there is.
