Wonderful large expansive garden like a park. Ponds, pools, vistas and wonderful plantings of colour, both perennials and natives and large trees.

We stayed for two nights in the cottage set in the middle of the beautiful gardens. The cottage was spacious, beautifully decorated and very comfortable. The thoughtful touches of vases of fresh flowers make at the difference. We had plenty of time to explore the amazing gardens. This was a highlight of our trip to NZ .

This was in the top 3 places I’ve ever had the pleasure of being at a wedding ... stunning!!! This was for my partners sisters wedding and we enjoyed the wedding in the gardens, then drinks and nibbles by the pool, then moved to a marquee that was set up beside the house. Absolutely beautiful!

The great thing about having weddings here is that is always a happy occasion. I love sharing this venue with those that appreciate it as much as I do!

Just this Sunday as Summer makes herself comfortable on the throne, taking over from Spring and filling Nature with her wondrous warmth, I visited Flaxmere for the second time albeit at a different time of year.
Proving that her hospitality was not a fluke the first time, Penny Zino was there again to welcome us to her garden.
When I visited her garden last it was nearly at the very end of the Summer and even then I found the garden wonderful.
This time round it was plus grand(more grand). When I spoke to Penny under the stately Golden Elm; The Silver Elm and the Copper Beech as our backdrop. . .I said to her, I think I have found the secret to the success of Flaxmere. .. That secret lies in the Trees. And she has planted them all herself. These three trees, the light that they exude is simply magical.

Even the many Firs or Pines in the garden, they are so delightful, placed just at the correct spot, and as a friend once said to me, "It doesn't blow my mind. Its simply mindblowing"

Penny Zino single handedly keeps this garden; an utter feat at her age, without offence, this is said.

Her Delphiniums, Roses, aaaah! What a delight. If the reader has not yet gone to see Flaxmere nestled amongst the trees at the foot of the spine of the New Zealand Alps,
you need to go now! If have been there before, go again. This garden has much more to offer than just a one time visit. There are so many different nuances one misses with only one visit and I will visit again, though next time I will try first to go in the dead of Winter.
According to an ancient Japanese gardener there should be six sublimities to a garden. Although it is most rare to find or achieve this Flaxmere has spaciousness-seclusion and artifice and and water-panoramas. There is one part of the garden close to the pond of the Swan, when one sits on the bench; one looks across the water towards a long section of cut grass that leads the eye over taller grasses in the distance, this further leads to eye onto a set of tall trees at least a mile away and beyond that the blue argon of the mountains. I could sit there all day and create a Monet moment. Sublime...

Another sublimity is antiquity, and when one looks at Flaxmere, the way that the light falls through the garden, also the house, the way it resides in the space of the garden, one can only achieve this as a garden matures. . .slowly. . .through the passage of Time. . .

One of the very best things about gardening and sharing it with others are the encouraging comments such as this! Gardening is an art form, the way trees and plants are put together. It is constantly changing, and there lies the challenge!

This was a marvellous place to celebrate our 8oth birthdays with a weekend in The Cottage. The whole garden is a great credit to the hard work put in by Penny. There is such a range of features as well as plants and trees. It is well worth a visit.

The spring garden was in full boom when we visited for the Art in the Garden event. The established trees provide a gorgeous backdrop and structure for the garden. The new spring leaf colour emphasised the colours of the flowers. The garden contains several planting areas linked by a series of beautiful ponds and waterways, increasing the sense of serenity and peace the garden exudes. The perennial borders are gorgeous, the vistas across the countryside hint at the nearby mountains and the sound of sheep remind us that this beautiful garden was a labour of love for a farming family. The history of the garden development is featured at the gate and one can only admire the vision and determination of Penny & John as they laboured over the years. It was a gorgeous place to visit and i would certainly recommend it. Go if you can. Open by prior appointment.

Penny was kind enough to accomodate us after the owners of the house we were originally booked into unfortunately had their property damaged by the recent earthquake. We were blown away by this stunning and artistically designed garden crafted by Penny over many years. It has to be seen to be believed and after coming from the the dry hot countryside of Australia, the peonies are to die for!
The accomodation is neat tidy and just right for a getaway. No traffic noise and only the sound of the birds to greet you in the morning. We loved staying here and wish it was longer! Thanks Penny, this has to be one of the nicest accommodations we have ever stayed in! We shall be back!

It was a magical setting for a marriage ceremony held in Flaxmere Garden with a profusion of Autumnal colours - truly awesome in every sense of the word. I have had the privilege of visiting Flaxmere on several occasions and eveytime, in all seasons and all weather it is simply a most beautiful place to be.

This autumn has been a real joy in spite of being so dry, and being able to share it all for a wedding was magic for me as well

I have visited a number of private gardens and Flaxmere has left the most precious memories for me. I was touched by the story of its owner (Penny) and then simply got lost in the tranquility and beauty of Flaxmere Garden. The ponds, the distribution of self seeding flowers and the wonderful trees, each telling a story of a gardener that has cared for them. I have yet to see Delphiniums grow to such height as hers and the unique double-headed white hydrangea. I shall return to Flaxmere in Winter and Spring. You should too!
