I recently rode on the 12 day Tekapo trek & have previously done a 6 day trek with Alpine Horse Safaris. The horses are amazingly strong & sure footed. These treks are outstanding adventures, where you get to see incredible scenery that most people will never get to experience.

Jenny and Lawrie at Alphin Horse Safaris did a fantastic job at getting us setup and taking us on beautiful scenic trek. I would recommend them to anyone looking for a great time in the NZ outdoors, whether it be a single or multiday trek. Knowledgable, kind, and outgoing, they offer a great service and will definitely be back. 10/10!

Last month I returned from my fabulous 3 day Trek with Alpine Horse Safaris and I wish I could be back there again - I loved every minute of the adventure and I would do it again in a heartbeat. Jenny is great at the emails, corresponding with you and a fabulous cook so you'll never go hungry on the trek. Lawrie is a very knowledgeable man with plenty of experience and knows his way around the stunning countryside. The horses are all gorgeous and so sure footed on the big hills and through the flowing rivers. My gorgeous trusty steed Nico looked after me for the three days and was a pleasure to ride. From the moment you arrive to the time that you leave it's a wonderful adventure and Jenny and Lawrie make you feel very welcome but don't expect everything to be done for you - the whole experience is about you learning how they do things and the reasons behind them. Embrace it and you will have the best time. Go in with an open mind and give everything a go - challenge yourself and you will enjoy it. Be honest about your horse riding capabilities The horses are wonderful - big and bold, very sure footed and ready to go. You ride for about 6-7 hours so try and get a little fit before you go. Do stretches to help with any sore area's and a soak in the cold rivers or creeks certainly help and are so refreshing and good for the body and soul. Jenny is a wonderful host/cook/organiser and you'll never go hungry. Lawrie is stern and straight up and you'll earn his respect if you try things and help out and listen. Yvonne was also on our trip as an assistant and she is an amazing horse woman and host - there isn't anything that Yvonne can't do and she is a pleasure to be around. What a blast we all had on this trek - the horses, the company, the stunning scenery was so worth the trip. Awesome memories that I will never forget and I will definitely be back to do another. Thank you for having me - Kerrie Whistler from Taupo.

This fantastic trip was as much a training course as a trek, packhorses are a whole different ballgame. You'll learn how to pack a swag, harness a packhorse, come back with a whole new vocabulary (how do you work surcingle into a conversation in Auckland?) and you'll learn to get to grips with a myriad of straps, bits of leather, what they're called and the order that they must be attached. If you don't learn something on this trip you weren't paying attention.

What a great privilege it is to ride through the vast high country and huge valleys that are normally inaccessible to most of us, you'll see sights that you only ever get to see on 'Country Calendar'. Lawrie and Yvonne are thoroughly competent and Jenny is a great caterer (see Tip 2). Lawrie has 30 years experience and a huge depth of knowledge, Yvonne seems to be everywhere at once.

I came back a better rider, learnt a lot about so many different things, met a great group of people, saw some beautiful sights and acquired an appreciation for those beautiful massive horses, what's not to like? When you get back home, if you happen to be stuck in the traffic, you can transport your mind to the Hurunui and pretend you're still there until the lights change.

Tip 1. Learn how to tie a bowline competently, you'll be doing it every day.
Tip 2. Drop a kilo or two before you start, Jenny doesn't skimp on the great food.

The whole experience from when I booked my horse trek was very well organised. Jenny was quick to reply to my emails with questions. The horses were well behaved and good to ride. We were well looked after with meals and all the equipment for the ride was first class. I would not hesitate to book another trip.

Wow, what a wonderful experience! I finished the 6 day trek a week ago and still buzzing. The horses were superb, and scenery stunning. Jenny, Laurie, and Yvonne made a great team. Miro the mare will always hold a special place .

. I have just completed the 12 day trek south to Tekapo and it exceeded all of my highest expectations. The horses were well mannered, incredibly sure footed, willing, free moving, and fit. They calmly undertook the challenges of crossing rivers, climbing over mountain passes and being ridden by people whom they didn’t know. The guides, Lawrie and Corrina and their assistant Rianne always put the welfare of the horses and the safety of the of the riders first. They were extremely competent and experienced in all the tasks needed to guide a team of 13 riders and 26 horses safely through a 400 km trek . Decisions were based on experience and local knowledge and the planning throughout the trip was meticulous.
We rode through stunning and varied landscapes that at times took our breath away. We experienced the life of the high country sheep stations, bunked down in all sorts of interesting accommodations and ate wholesome, home cooked food . ( no dehydrated packaged food on this trip!)
Our group of 13 riders and 3 staff quickly became a team that pulled together, got the work done, and were supportive and encouraging of each other. At the end of the days ride the whole group got stuck into the task of caring for the horses and then would settle into a relaxed evening with a couple of beers or glasses of wine, a great dinner and lots and lots of laughter and fun.
Our group had riders of a wide range of abilities from beginner to experienced and there were horses in the team suited for each level.
I would highly recommend this adventure for people with a desire for adventure, some physical stamina, and a willingness to work as part of a team and to take guidance from the guides on matters of safety.
Thank you to Lawrie, Jenny, Corrina and Rianne for the trip of a lifetime.

I consider myself very fortunate to have been on five treks with Alpine Safaris over the last ten years. To be able to ride over the high country stations & to see scenery that only a small percentage of people, see, is a privilege.
The Tekapo experience is the '' ultimate experiance''. Riding over snow capped peaks, crossing big rivers the scenery is spectacular & the tranquillity is amazing. the only sounds are the skylarks singing & the horse noises. The nights skies are beautiful.
The horses are big, gentle & having been born & breed on the hill country they are sure footed & they just keep going on. But with all horse treks there is always an element of risk. Of course the horses are going to get spooked if something untoward happens ie helicopters, motor bikes or machinery they have never experienced.
Occationally accidents do happen & when they do it puts everyone in a stressful situation.
The Alpine Horse team of Lawrie, Jenny & Corinna do everything they can to make the treks as safe as possible but can never be fully prepared for the unexpected. The team aims to make the treks as enjoyable as possible & to get riders & horses safely home.
The team matches horses to riders so it's very important that people state their riding abilities honestly. Last year we had three absolute novices on the Tekapo ride. One girl had never been on a horse & I'm sure there were probably times when she wondered why she was there but at the end of the trip she would have looked back & thought ''Wow, look what I achieved!!''
So if you love horses, love the outdoors & got the right attitude & want the ''Ultimate experiance'', get some like-minded friends together, get fit & book a trek with Alpine Safaris -- you won't be disappointed.

What a brilliant adventure with great company of guests and staff. It was a privilege to ride such great trustworthy horses, the scenery was stunningly majestic!
The food was brilliantly good and wholesome. The weather helped us along most of the time, Laurie, Jenny and Corrina did everything they could to make sure it was memorable.
The part I liked the least was finishing the trek! It was physically challenging and hard at times, but an awesome experience of the high country.
The best part was the scenery, I couldn't believe it could get better, but it did! Good boots and a good small camera is a must!
I was told by an experienced horse trekker who has done many horse treks overseas that he ranked this as the best in the world. As I reflect on the memories of my wonderful adventure, I am inclined to agree!
