Rugged black sandy hot water beach
Dec 2020
Spacious and lovely beach. If you are expecting golden sands, with gentle breeze and smooth calm seas, you will be disappointed. This is not that kind of beach. It is however part of the rugged coastline with strong breezes, black sand and wide expanse beaches. It has its own rugged beauty. Plus be prepared to dig (with a shovel) for your own natural hot water 'spa spot. Be sure to check the tides and make sure you go when the tide is going out to enjoy the beach. Be aware you will need to climb a steep-ish sand dune (depending on your fitness level) to access the beach. Worth the experience.

It is OK beach
Dec 2020
Famous for hot water beach, maybe not really hot and easy to find. You need a spade to dig a hole close to the water. And at the right time when the tide is low, quite close so the sea water can fill the hole, and the hot source coming from the sand dig at the bottom of the hole, let's say it is warm sand and make the sea water a bit warm as well. However, it is fun activity when involving plenty of the family members. The black sandy beach, common for the West Coast of North Island is very spacious. Location is approx 3 km away from Kawhia Town Centre, and you need to walk climbing and descending sand dune for the last 200m. All for free.

What a treasure. We visited at the perfect time when the tide was fully out. A short climb over the sand dunes straight into paradise

Great beach

Beware of the very hot black sand dunes to the beach. Bring shoes. Beautiful beach. Much quieter than hot water beach in the corromandel. Can dig for your own hot pools 2 hours before low tide. Nice wide area and lots of time to dig your own pool, dip in the sea and go back to your pool. Bring a spade. The waves in the ocean can be strong so be aware.

New Zealand's best kept secret?
Jan 2019
Starting with lunch in the village with a huge ice cream for one dollar! Drove to the beach about 4 miles away, parked in the car park with about two other cars, climbed the dunes and looked down to see about 20 people on the beach. There was a quad bike and we could hire a shovel for two dollars ( remember the ice cream for 1 dollar!). We dug a pit about 2m x 1m and it filled up immediately with water about 40 degrees hot! Spent 90 minutes there and went back to the village for another ice cream!

Nice hot bath right on a beach
Dec 2019
Ask locals for directions. The beach is east of town. Bring a shovel. Look for discolorations at the edge of incoming water as the tide is going out. That discoloration is caused by the hot water (154F) upwelling at your feet. Dig in and enjoy.

So-so. Nothing else nearby. Long drive.

Not nearly as good as the real hot water beach. The water isn’t all that warm, and it’s on the middle of nowhere. There’s a small town with one cafe close by and possibly some fishing opportunities. I recommend you go to the real Hot Water Beach instead.

Who would have thought you could enjoy the beach in the middle of winter! A bit of effort to dig your hole but was well worth it to have a warm bath while watching the sunset over the ocean.

We loved this campground. Our unit was 5 m from the water and the beds were really comfortable. Well kept utilities and small enough to feel exclusive. We spent 2-3 hours at ocean beach (hot water beach) watchingbthe sunset. It was a special experience. We would definately come back if we didn't live too far away.

We found the hot water
Apr 2019 • Family
Lots of fun digging in the sand together to find the hot water directly in front of the metal pole, right by the waters edge. Best to build a pool on a higher bit of ground by the waters edge and just before dead low tide.
