About
Birdwoods is a very special place in the heart of Hawke's Bay. Set in the countryside just 3km from Havelock North Village, and an easy attractive ride along the new cycle way direct to Birdwoods Gallery and its small companion, the Birdwoods Sweet Shop, which are a 'must see' for young and old. Three historic buildings have been relocated to this lovely rural setting and transformed to become a distinctive and award winning visitor attraction. Take time to shop for treasures in the renowned unusual gallery with an African flavour. Enjoy our famous morning or afternoon tea or come for a delicious garden lunch with family or friends. (Lunch bookings recommended). Walk the expansive sculpture gardens displaying the largest collection of Zimbabwean stone and metal art in New Zealand. Birdwoods is a place 'Where Everything has a Story' and you leave feeling better than when you came.

Birdwoods: gorgeous establishment in Havelock North, a veritable treasure-trove; my first time here. "Birds'' that greet you before you first enter - from big & bold to small & intricate, eclectic selections from Africa in the store attached, stunning silver-motif cafe, outside to sculptures (love the sheep!), Moroccan mosaic tables, & so much more. (I have gait/walking challenges (stroke), wear a legbrace.) We were here for morning tea –what a spread & the choice, decadence! Then, sweet-for-a-sweet, chocoholic, lolly lovers – the Sweet shoppe experience; thanks. Must visit again soon.

Disappointing experience. Had visited last year and enjoyed. Visiting from Wellington I wanted to take family who hadn’t been before. Made a special effort to visit and arrived at 1.30 p.m.
No one greeted us and there were diners in the annex attached to the gift shop still eating. We sat at a vacated table which had not yet been cleared. We waited. No one came. I then went to the kitchen hatch area and asked if we ordered at the counter or was there table service? The lady said someone would be over to take our orders. No one came. I returned to the counter looking for anyone to help or take an order. No one was there. I waited and after a few minutes gave up. We left.
So disappointing taking new visitors, it was embarrassing. The prices here are not cheap and we hadn’t arrived at a peak time nor just as they were closing.
Will not try a third time.

Birdwoods was the setting for our small family wedding and was outstanding on all fronts; the setting, faculties, the service from Louise and her staff and the HB weather.
We throughly recommend Birdwoods for a visit/lunch and small functions, you won’t be disappointed!

Stunning setting. Loved the sculptures, the gardens, craft shop and lolly shop. We visited for morning tea and the French Press coffee was exceptional. The savory and sweet scones were simply superb. Presentation and service was absolutely first class. Highly recommended and advise booking as we can well imagine this venue being exceptionally popular.

I am a scone conneseur and I give the Birdwoods one 5 stars - very large and light, served with lovely jam and plenty of cream. Accompanied by a large plunger of coffee, it made a lovely mid-morning meal. The sculpture garden is delightful and I happily spent hours there. The sweet shop is wonderful.

For a relaxed wholesome lunch - go here. It's all in the visual detail and flavour here. Be sure to get a homemade lemonade. Beautiful setting with friendly happy staff. A wonderful family run business.

Came for lunch for a group of ladies and were seated outside and where we were sited the was no shade offered so extremely hot and uncomfortable. We were a group of 8 and all of our meals came out one out at a time over 1/2 hour, even forgot a couple of meals, and we had to ask for our drinks that were not served until after most had received their meals. On leaving it took 15 minutes for the wait staff to process our payments. I understand that due to covid they are short staffed but this was way more than being short staffed, this was totally an example of staff not being trained.

What an awesome place, we just stopped in to look in the shop but as we wandered around the grounds, we wished we had stopped in for brunch. They have done an amazing job with this place, its worth a stop.

I think that you and the owner misunderstand my review. To the owner, yes, detailed because I was reviewing the soup ONLY, not the ambience or decorations or garden or any other feature. Specific because I've not sampled the entire menu. The 'M' stood for Maggi. I'm sorry that the bizarre mix of condiments and spices each fighting for notice gave all three of us the sensation of ersatz, but it did, and I understand why. Also beef jus in mushroom soup - and not telling customers at the counter? Not cool.
What has 'cafe not fine dining' got to do with taste?
I'm not dissing customers who liked and like the soup, so you have no need to diss my review. My view is that good fresh mushrooms have no need of flavours which overpower their delicacy. There were plenty of mushrooms, as I said, but they were simply swamped by too many other ingredients. My view. Not yours. But I'm entitled to my view.
As for Birdwoods, we went there on my recommendation because my previous visit was in the summer, in the garden. The garden is very pleasant. The interior on the second visit was warm etc., but I repeat, I reviewed the soup, not the place.

I have no idea why I have been seen this. What is the question?

In reply to why you didn't get the fifth star, the first time we came here it was amazing, treated like valued customers, this time we arrived in a family group, wishing them to enjoy the service we SO enjoyed...However there wasn't any great customer service, the beautiful tray with the special touches forgotten and everything for all of us lumped on one tray. No one came to ask if we were happy, the jam and cream weren't enough for the number of scones. It wasn't special and we regretted taking everyone...

Fair enough and on this occasion we did not deserve the extra star. Your comments are appreciated and ones we will take on board and help us strive to give everyone the special experience we are known for, however, busy we are. With thanks, Louise Stobart - Owner

Of course you can as we love dogs at Birdwoods! However Council does not permit them in the Conservatory dining area, but there is plenty of table space in the garden weather permitting. Kind regards, Louise Stobart
