WITHIN an area roughly four blocks square, you'll find museums, cafes, specialty food shops, boutiques, galleries, restaurants, pubs, hair & aesthetics salons and more! Easily accessible on foot, by transit or by car, the ByWard Market offers a unique experience for all. ESTABLISHED by Lt-Col. John By in 1826, the ByWard Market is one of Canada's oldest and largest public markets. The legendary builder of the Rideau Canal, Colonel By himself laid out the street plan of the Market, designating George Street and York Street to be extra wide to accommodate the creation of a public market and gathering place.

The Market is one of Ottawa’s biggest attractions. I spent some time here while I lived in Ottawa for a month, and I never got bored. There are endless restaurants (pubs, Mexican, Indian, French, diners to name a few) and lots of cute, locally created...More

Great areas to hang out night or day. There is something for everyone. Located in the heart of Ottawa and close to the parliament buildings it's an easy walk to find a cafe or pub or meal.

This is an eclectic warren of shops ( just okay) and restaurants (quite good). Worth the walkthrough. I bought a beautiful silk scarf - a perfect gift.

Lot of places to eat, varied market, but not open to late. We were there on a Saturday and the stalls were closed by 5:30.

Byward market features an authentic farmers market at certain times (outdoors) and a year round market with bakeries, eateries, fromageries, amd specialty food shops. Always a nice change of pace in the heart of the national capital.

There are many good restaurants, farm retails, art shops and activities. However, the washroom at the second floor is tiny with limited spaces.
