- JobylakeOttery St. Mary, United Kingdom1,178 contributionsWorth the winding drive to the topThe drive is a winding one from Jasper and is 27kms. Plenty of parking but gets busy and full at peak times. We arrived at lunchtime on a Sunday and had to wait for a space to become available. The trail is well paved. The walk has some steep areas but it is worth the hike for the views at the end. At the end of the trail, the ground becomes uneven so watch your step on the stones.Visited July 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 10 November 2023
- WL StClairNashville, Tennessee41 contributionsTotally worth it.This was one of several “quick & easy hikes” (oxymoron) we did during our visit to the Canadian Rockies this Fall. Totally worth it. Highly recommend visiting the stream/pond area that’s on a short side road you drive past on the way in/out of the Glacier area.Visited September 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 19 December 2023
- Moscato-MamaAirdrie, Canada3,669 contributionsBeautiful area, short and long hike options.July 2024 The road to get there is very windy but it is such a beatiful area. We didn't go prepared to hike so only did the short hike near the glacier lake. It has a paved path and a nice view of the glacier and lake below. There is a creek at the start of the hike beside the parking lot that is a nice place to sit and take in the the view. There are outhouses in the parking lot. We brought our dog but I did notice the one way said there were no dogs allowed, I am not sure if that was the way that took you to the meadows.Visited July 2024Travelled with familyWritten 24 July 2024
- kklammers1217 contributionsBeautiful overlook to the Glacier and PondBeautiful hike! Fairly steep but worth the views of the glacier and pond. There are two viewpoints. The trail that goes to the right at the split (there are posted signs with maps) is a wonderful overlook of the glacier and pond. The one to the left is very steep and ends at a cairn at the top of a mound with not much of a view other than the mountains that you could see from below. It's a bit confusing as the trail continues on after the cairin, so we weren't quite sure where the end was until we met someone with a trail map. If we did it again we would not do this portion of the trail as the view from the cairin wasn't worth the climb in our opinion.Visited July 2024Travelled with familyWritten 25 July 2024

I hiked Edith Cavell Meadows on July 25, 2021. Arrived at 8:30 am and was one of the first people on the trail which was lovely. This hike is my favourite in Jasper.
The trail starts off along a paved uphill path leading to the first viewpoint near the base of the Cavell Pond and Glacier. From there it continues up and around a large pile of rocks and then enters the forest. The trail climbs gradually along switchbacks through the forest before reaching a junction before the meadows. I recommend taking the “easier” route up and then the steeper route on the way down. The meadows were gorgeous with colourful wildflowers! The trail continued to gain steady elevation and once above the tree line, opened up to dramatic and incredible views of Mount Edith Cavell and the surrounding mountains! Everywhere you looked, the views were amazing and didn’t feel real. I even heard a few avalanches on the way up (but did not see them). From there, the trail led to the second viewpoint overlooking the glacier and pond which was beautiful. It continued to climb all the way to the third and final viewpoint, and followed along an exposed rocky area to the top of the ridge. The trail became very steep and there were lots of loose rocks. This was the most difficult section but so worth it once you make it to the top! The views of the valley and mountains were stunning. It was very windy and cold at the top, so bring something warm to wear.
I took the steeper route on the loop down from the third viewpoint and it was definitely steep! Hiking poles are necessary to feel safe and steady. It was much faster coming down the mountain. In total, the hike took me 3 hours and 50 minutes including lots of breaks along the way, and a longer stop at the top.
I saw an adorable marmot along the trail near the beginning on top of the rocks which was cool. Other than that, no other wildlife. Incredible trail! I would highly recommend this one.

This is definitely a worthwhile short hike. The small glacial lake with chunks of ice floating around at the foot of the glacier, surrounded by these huge mountain is an amazing sight. Get there early during the busy season.

We thought the hike was closed due to covid so we were initially thinking just to go to the trailhead and do the small hike which was open but when we went we realized it opened few days ago, so came back next day to the full hike. Its mentioned as 7 km but it's kind of misleading. If you include all the viewpoints it stretches to about 10-11 km which is a big number considering it's on the steeper part of trail. Views although are worth the effort and really fun and enjoyable hike with lots of varied views of glacier, lake and the valley

This hike was one of the highlights of our trip for our 19 year old son because he was blown away by the sight and sounds of the Angel Glacier. The hike could be challenging at times if you continue onto the meadows. I could have stopped once completing the short trail to view the Angel Glacier but my husband and son were really glad we continue to the meadows--even thought it was raining!

This was our favorite pure hike of our whole vacation. The whole area is beautiful and awe inspiring. This hike is challenging, but most can do it with time. Make sure to go down to the glacier lake and hike up the mountain trail.

how difficult is this hike? like is it just an uphill or do we need to climb a ton of rocks, etc. thanks!
Written 14 September 2019
It’s uphill but not terribly difficult unless you plan to take the right trail at the split and go to the top of the ridge. The left trail loops around and returns to the main trail mostly downhill from that point.

Do you still need a parking permit to go up to this hike? How should we go about doing that? We will be in Jasper the first week of August.
Thanks!
Written 21 July 2019
A parking permit is no longer required as they have completed the expanded parking lot - we were there last week. It does still get busy so if you get there at peak times you might have to wait a little for a space.

We are planing a trip to jasper in September. Is the mount Edith Cavell trail open?
Written 25 August 2018
That’s s good question I think it’s open until October but look at the Canada Parks website for current trails information they are very helpful. 😁
Written 12 August 2019
If I already bought the parks pass for Banff and Jasper, do I still need to get a permit to visit Edith Cavell Trail? I thought that was included in the pass I bought. Is this permit separate? thanks
Written 30 July 2018
No permits needed anymore they have 2 parking lots there. However I’d suggest you arrive early like before 9am because we got there on Sunday at 11am and was all filled up but waited for an open space for like 10 mins. It’s a good 20 min drive off the main highway

We're planning a trip in June 2018. Do you still need a permit for your vehicle in June?
Written 21 March 2018
