Being a longtime local in Banff I wanted to try Mel’s new menu and new atmosphere! For those of you who are unaware, Mel’s has moved from Lynx st. over to Banff Ave. They’ve done a great job creating a “Mel’s” atmosphere with some renovations to their newly acquired space...
I went for breakfast once this week and also went for an early prime rib dinner a couple of days later. Traditional breakfast was on point and the prime rib was exactly how I remembered it from Mel’s old location. Excellent food! Great service from Carter (the bartender) and a very warm welcome from Robin (the manager) upon entry... This restaurant is family friendly and my top pick in Banff for quality food at a reasonable price. Also Banff’s best sports bar!
Check out Mel’s, you won’t be disappointed!

The new location is bright and spacious. Upon entering we sanitized, had temperature cheque and recorded contact information. We shared the omelette, the portions are generous and good for sharing. Friendly service. Highly recommend.

In our visit in December we heard Wild Bills was being renovated... We did not realize that Melissa's were moving in! While I appreciate we are in CoVid times, it was refreshing not having the line up out of the door and to relax in more spacious surroundings. They have done an outstanding job of the decor and it looks like there's more to come! We ordered a mixed grill breakfast each and our daughter ordered the breakfast bagel. The gentleman helping us was very efficient and friendly and made the visit very personable. Views were amazing and CoVid check in was very modern and slick (my only comment here is for the team to remember not everyone is as tech savvy and all restaurants have different procedures :) ) be a little patient and aware so this piece can be supported. Food was very high quality and we look forward to next time!!!!

Booked reservations for the New Year’s Eve Buffet. Two adults, one child. Service was friendly on arrival. On examination, the buffet had little to no presentation. Food looked as though it had been sitting for quite some time. The buns were stale and dry, and none of the food seemed to be made in house . ( think packaged potato salad , powder mix mashed potato’s , and previously frozen rubber chicken. ) The desserts were an embarrassment of fruit slices and boxed brownie squares from the grocery store. Nothing authentic in the full meal. It felt like a really bad wedding reception spread. Worst of all it was over $50 per person - even my child !! And to top it off they added a gratuity of almost $30 on the bill ( we only had water, so I’m not sure what the tip was for ?) . Total bill was over $200 for one of the worst meals I have had in a long time. One of those moments in life where you felt truly ripped off as a tourist. Really dampened our New Year’s Eve.

The last time I visited Melisa's Missteak, it was located on Lynx Street. The food was exquisite, the atmosphere fantastic, and the service was special. It was a required place to go for dinner each and every time we visited Banff, and we enjoyed a great many meals there.

This was the first time we visited its new Banff Ave location (originally Wild Bill's Saloon, then it became Earls before it moved away to Wolf St). The decor of the place still reminded me of Wild Bill's, with a dining experience to match.

The food and atmosphere was okay; it was a simple, pub style experience. Lost is that intimate dining experience that we had originally fell in love with. I ordered the prime rib special, it was a "buffet", it was cold. I asked to have it grilled to put the grill mark on it and to warm it up a bit, they tried, but no grill marks, and still cold. I could have done better by going to Baton Rouge, at the very least, they would have gotten it right.

I know that the Banff residents fought hard to preserve this restaurant, but they didn't fight hard enough. A true gem of a restaurant has been lost.

I will always fondly remember this place for what it was when it was on Lynx St, just like I will remember the Caboose. This particular version, I would like to erase from my memory and never to experience again.

I arrived at 6PM on a Saturday and was seated at the bar. The atmosphere is fairly loud, with no barriers between guests, and pumped in music. It has an ambiant dB of around 75 while half full, measured from the bar.

I ordered the Chicken Cordon Blu from the menu with roasted potatoes and a glass of water. When my food arrived I’d still yet to receive silverware, which someone was able to grab for me. The mushroom sauce was excellent, if a little scare, and the chicken was cooked well.

The roasted potatoes were badly over cooked, to the point of actually being tough. Something I’d never experienced outside of food that’s been under a heat lamp for hours. The veggies were also barely seasoned, and the whole dish needed a fair bit of salt.

I returned the roasted potatoes as they were inedible, and received mashed potatoes. These were an improvement and were at least properly cooked, with a flavour that was not quite butter, I suspect they used margarine. The gravy tasted like it used packaged mix, and it was disappointing. They have slow cooked meats on the menu but don’t make it into quality gravy.

I sent back most of my food and was given a 25% discount. But even with that I drastically overpaid for food a chain diner could have made better. I think I now know what Melissa’s Mistake was, below average food for premium prices.

Went to eat last evening and since I was going out with people from Saskatchewan who’d never been here before I thought this would be a good place as it’s been around for sometime.

Well my experience was poor, only good thing was Taylor she was delightful to have serve us.

Food was not worth the money, I would have better value at Dennys.
The steak was so small and the price was $40 the chicken burgers were average.
When I pay too dollar for items I expect too dollar all round.
This establishment serves the ketchup squeeze bottle and the mayo came in its own small package like you’d get at The Husky Dead Mans Flats gas stop.

As far my experience you’ll be better off at The Keg.

Reviews, good or bad are part of business and each client is different, I’m speaking from my extensive background as a long term restaurant/hotel/resorts culinary professional.

I would not return for the food, a drink sure, food? NO

Went for brunch before we headed home.
My wife had the crab and asparagus omelet C$18. She said she enjoyed it. But it was not real crab, but imitation crab flavoured pollock. Her fried potato shred was tender crisp like it should be.
I had the salmon eggs benny C$19. Good amount of sliced smoked salmon. I forgot to ask for soft eggs, and wasn't asked, but good nevertheless. The hollandaise sauce had broken but tasted OK. My potato shreds was inedible as it was dried out and hard - sitting on warming tray too long perhaps?
I got the impression that server Kelly wasn't having a good day, but did a good job, checking with us and topping up the coffee C$3.75.

We visited for lunch in July and September. In July they had Banff Ave closed to traffic, and a large patio on the road. It was so nice to sit outside and enjoy the ambiance. In September the patio was gone, and we ate indoors, upstairs and overlooking the streets.

Service was excellent and attentive, both times. The servers had to run up and down the stairs to serve the patio on the road. It must have been exhausting, so I appreciate their attitude.

I had the 6oz AAA Sirloin Steak Sandwich (Open faced on thick cut garlic toast with coleslaw). It was cooked perfectly, and absolutely delicious. I will definitely be back.

We arrived early, around 5 p.m. and only a few tables were filled. We were looking forward to the Prime Rib dinner that we both ordered. But when it arrived, it appeared that it had been sitting there for a while as it was almost cold, or perhaps more likely, it had been put in the Microwave for not quite long enough to heat it thoroughly?) The vegetables, carrots and Brussels sprouts, were very dry, not fresh at all, almost as if they had been left over from the previous night. My Prime Rib was ok, but the slice my husband got had an odd redness to it... I thought it was probably an end-piece from the night before that hadn't been wrapped/stored properly. Overall, we were extremely surprised and underwhelmed by the poor meal that was served. Melissa's used to be a very good place to eat in Banff, but based on our latest experience there, we will not
be returning.
