One of the highlights of my time in Peru. As an avid birder, I really enjoyed getting up close with the birds and animals. The guides were super sharp-eyed and knowledgeable. They even pointed out a Common Potoo (camouflaged and difficult to spot) sleeping inside the banks of the river. I had a private tour, so having the extra few pairs of eyes was valuable for me. The guides were also friendly and humorous, I enjoyed their company.

Peaceful!

Great experience! I came from Lima and only had 6 days left to explore the jungle, and while its not super super jungle, its close. The canoe trip into one of the small canals was incredible, we had to dodge a ton of fallen trees and branches and even one time we had to step over a tree and back into the canoe. Interesting moment indeed. If I ever go back (which I probably won't as I try not to go the same places twice) I would definitely book 1-2 nights of stay, as the peace and harmony there is incredible. Bring a book and maybe some beers (they don't have your general selection of choice when it comes to food and beverages, so bring what you'd like) and just chill in their hammocks after the canoe trip. Very friendly people, that had been running this place for 3-4 generations. They are small and accept maximum 30 people a day, which is why I'll definitely recommend it. For me the worst thing is travelling to over exploited areas and this is not one of them... Yet :-)
NOTE: They serve you breakfast and lunch and the price varies (from what I understood at the hotel) depending on how many you go. I paid 100 soles which I believe this experience is definitely worth. Last but not least they have a small giftshop with locally produced coffee and chocolate as well as wrist bands. Overall superb.

Well worth a visit
Sep 2016 • Couples
Was recommended to visit by a friend. Definitely worth it. We were collected at 5.30 for a 45 minute taxi ride to be dropped off for our boat. An hour later we were at Tingana. All I can say was wow. The noise of the jungle was quite unreal. Juan our host was very funny even without any English. After breakfast, a very simple one, please bare in mind that this is in the jungle. So food is basic and local fare. We went up the river in dugout canoes for a discovery trip of the Amazon. We returned 3 hours later ready for lunch. Again basic but enjoyable. Rested in the afternoon in a comfy hammock. There were quite a few volunteers around when we went so not as quiet as I would have thought but still relaxing. We stayed the night but you can just do a day trip. Our hut was basic but provided all you needed. Toilet facilities are what you would expect in the jungle. Eco toilets and no showers. Take strong mosi spray. Also swim suits if you fancy a swim in the river. Was assured that there were no snakes around !!! All in all great fun good value and a fantastic was of seeing inside the jungle safely.

Peaceful, beautiful, friendly
Aug 2016 • Family
Tingana is a place for someone who is not afraid of a few bugs and mosquitos, nor using eco toilets and getting along without running water, Our family found a peaceful adventure with the lovely people of La Tingana Refugio. This is a very dedicated association of local people working to keep the upper Amazon ecosystem as pristine as possible. The coffee, chocolate and foods are locally grown and we were all very happy with the flavors. We left with bags of locally grown coffee.
Visits include a drive from Moyobamba to the banks of the Rio Maya, where we were met by a boat and taken 40 minutes or so up the river then down a tributary. There we found boats tied to a small dock and a group of thatch roofed buildings and were greeted genially by the staff.
Our family group stayed overnight, but an Austrian group and their tour guide left at the end of the day.
We were impressed by Juan's hospitality and Rosa's great cooking. All of the staff were knowledgeable about the flora and fauna and very hospitable. Rosa made fine Peruvian food, coffee and chocolate using only a wood stove;. My husband was able to go birding while my daughter and I lazed in the hammocks then later went on a boat ride up the river.
This is not a 'touristy 'place. I and my family highly recommend La Tingana to anyone looking for a great time 'roughing it' in a very comfortable way in the upper reaches of the Peruvian jungle.

Tingana - a nice diversion but not one of the top experiences in Peru
Jun 2016 • Family
If you happen to be staying in Moyobamba, this is a nice day-trip, depending on the time of year and consequently the water levels. I wouldn't necessarily recommend going out of your way to see it, as there are other places in Peru with greater concentrations of wildlife, for example, in many of the creeks and tributaries around the Pacaya Samiria reserve, Manu or Tambopata. Similarly, the landscape is nice but not as photogenic as at many other 'flooded forest' locations in Peru.

We were there in late June, when the water levels were getting a bit low for comfort. Earlier in the season would be better.

The locals provide breakfast and a mini-lunch, both of which were good. The hammocks were great. The swings were fun.

No-one spoke English. The tour group was not very quiet, so it was perhaps not surprising we saw little wildlife, but there is no option for a private trip.

What a great day

My grandson loved the trip as he saw turtles and monkeys plus many birds. We enjoyed it as well as the attention was very personal and our guide, who is part of the native community who offers the day trip down the river, was very informative.

Another amazing time in Tingana. It was an spectacular journey, knowing more about of Tingana Nature Reserve. From my last visit to this Reserve, it improved so much with new implementations and more things to do.

This time my friends and I had an amazing tour by a boat ride around the river, where we were able to see so many types of monkeys, butterflies and birds; also getting useful information of the Aguajales and Renacales' benefits.

I can't wait to go back! - You must try to visit this place.

Great nature reserve close to Moyobamba
Jul 2015 • Friends
I have visited Tingana three times and I have had a great time every time. You need to wake up early and get to the river port around sunrise, where you then are taken by boat to Tingana. Once there you switch to a small paddle canoe and are taken around. You can see a variety of birds, a few different types of monkeys, and the plant life is exciting too. All in all a nice day trip and probably the best nature activity near Moyobamba.

Amazing

What an amazing tour and well worth the price. It is expensive, but once you are there you wont mind the price youve paid, because you know the money is going to a good cause, keeping nature alive and well kept. It is a bit far. The boat ride is beautiful. It tends to rain, so bring a wind breaker. Tingana Reserve was beautiful. I was able to see many differnt types of monkeys, birds, owls, insects and you may see some snakes around in their natural habitat. It was amazing. But, its not for kids. The children tend to scare the animals away. *If there are kids in your group, ask to put you in another group (they usually break up into a few groups). If you explain to them, theyll understand (speaking from expirience). I cant wait to go back!

Natural paradise close by Moyobamba
Oct 2014 • Friends
If you don't have the time to go deep into the Amazon basin, this is the place for you to still enjoy the jungle of the Amazon an hour away from Moyobamba down the Rio Mayo. You can either spend the day at the reserve of spend the night there is basic accomodation. Standard trip start in Moyobamba with an hour ride to the Rio Mayo embankement where you'll take a motorboat to the Tingana village where you'll have breakfast. Afterwards, you'll take canoes to enjoy the fauna and flora along the Mayo river, look up for those monkeys! After lunch, they'll bring you back by boat to the pier where you can catch your bus back to Moyobamba or any further destinations.
