I chose “Cozumel Fun Excursions” and booked the dune buggy/Punta Sur package. This was the last stop on our cruise. We were a group of 13 family members ranging in age from 12 to 73. Being that we had been to Cozumel a few times before, I wanted to book an excursion that would be something a little different. The excursion was to include our choice of either dune buggies or Jeeps, entrance to Punta Sur Park with a tour of the lighthouse and surrounding wet lands, stop at some small ruins, a beach break, lunch and a stop for tequila tasting. The company is located in front of a hotel right outside the port. We met our guide, Ruben, who explained what the tour included and gave us a tentative schedule for the day. However, our group was very “toured out”, and we asked if we could just go straight to the beach for the day and cut out stops and sights. Ruben was happy to oblige and said we could do whatever we wanted over the next 5.5 hours. He led us across the street to a parking area where we could choose our vehicles. We picked two dune buggies and a Jeep (for those who wanted more protection from the sun). We had started our tour a bit later (9:30 am), so I think most of the vehicles were already out on other tours. We were left with some very rusty dune buggies that had seen better days. The Jeep wasn’t much better. But this only made the experience that much more memorable!! (In hindsight, I think had we gotten there earlier, we could have picked some better vehicles because at the end of the day, the lot had filled up with some much better choices.) After some quick tips on how to drive the dune buggies (they are all manual), we set off through the streets of Cozumel. Ruben and the other guide (I did not catch his name) led the way in a VW Bug. The drive to the beach took about 45 minutes and involved going down a long road with no passing lanes and a very fast speed limit. It was quite an experience driving in dune buggies at that speed with other vehicles passing. Kind of crazy!!! We arrived at Punta Sur and Ruben led us right past all the sights we had wanted to skip, winding our way down a sandy road to the beach. The beach was absolutely beautiful with clear blue water and soft white sand. There was a small outdoor bar/restaurant, showers and a clean bathroom, plenty of chairs and tables and umbrellas. We were there very early (before 11am) and had the beach almost completely to ourselves. Ruben helped outfit everyone into snorkel gear and led the group out for a swim. Not a snorkeler myself, I stayed back at the beach and enjoyed relaxing in the water. It was the perfect temperature. My family returned to the beach after about 45 minutes and reported seeing beautiful fish, an enormous starfish, and huge conches. They had worked up an appetite and were ready for lunch. We were served our choice of either chicken or beef fajitas, rice and beans, right there at the beach restaurant seated at long tables. Everything tasted wonderful. Afterward, we spent the rest of the day swimming, finding seashells, napping under the umbrellas and just generally enjoying the beautiful area. The servers at the bar were very friendly and kept everyone “hydrated” (drinks were not included with lunch and no ice chests are allowed). Much later in the afternoon, the other tour groups began to arrive. We were so glad we had decided to spend the whole day at the beach rather than touring!!! Ruben reminded us when it was time to head back. We had an hour drive ahead and wanted to be back in port a bit early. We took the drive back along the beach, which was absolutely beautiful. At one point we passed through a brief downpour and were completely drenched in the dune buggies (no windshield wipers!!). It was so funny, we couldn’t stop laughing at our situation. The rain didn’t last long and Ruben pulled over and dried the windshields and we were off again. We drove through downtown Cozumel during “rush hour” which was interesting in and of itself. We arrived back at the parking lot with plenty of time to spare and said our goodbyes to Ruben and the other guide. This was one my family’s favorite excursions. It was simple and fun and definitely memorable. I highly recommend “Cozumel Fun Excursions”. The guys did a great job taking care of our group all day long. We had a fantastic time and will always remember our day in Cozumel.
