a must stop for vanilla lovers
Jul 2020
This place is a true Gem. my favorite vanilla would be the Vane Vanilla. I buy 2 big bottles every time I visit. I wish i could find it in Puerto Escondido , Mexico .
If you have a chance stop by. You will smell and taste the difference in great vanilla.

If you want vanilla...
Feb 2020
If you want vanilla, go here. The owner is very knowledgeable about vanilla and can explain the difference. There are many brands and types available. Very small store, next to garage parking lot before the bridge going from downtown to oldtown.

The best vanilla in town
Jan 2020
Vanilla is an extract obtained from the seed pods of a plant from the orchid family (Vanilla planifolia), a Mexican species. It is actually the only edible fruit from an orchid. The name comes from "vainilla" that in Spanish means small pod.

In Pre-Columbian times the plant was cultivated and enjoyed too by the Totonacs from Veracruz on the Caribbean side of Mexico. It was considered sacred and was used in ritual offerings, as medicine and as a perfume, not so much for food.

In the early XV, Century Aztecs started to combine vanilla (called Tlilxochitl) with chocolate which was what Hernán Cortés got offered by Emperor Moctezuma during a religious ceremony. Cortés was so impressed that he took a supply of the pods to Spain and offered it to his king too, where it, later on, became an exclusive beverage of aristocrats and royalty.

The best place to buy vanilla when in Puerto Vallarta is at "La Casa de la Vainilla".

This store is connected (street level) to the parking garage "Estacionamiento Juarez", L15. As you head from the Malecon to the south side of Vallarta, they are located just before the Rio Cuale bridge. They have a variety of vainilla bottles any grade from the common cheaper version to the best one in nice glass flasks. They also have vanilla powder as well as vanilla beans.

It is two times that we buy from el Señor Victor. M. Parra Castillón, the owner, and we are very satisfied: quality, good prices, excellent service. He can guide you to the type you need. Also sells deodorants vanilla based.

He can also be reached at extractonatural@gmail.com

THE Place to Buy Vanilla in PV
Dec 2019
Tiny little kiosk on Calle Morelos just north of the river (and just south of Agustin Rodriguez on the west side of the street) with the best selection of Mexican vanilla in town. Proprietor Victor is very knowledgeable and helpful.

We’ll be back!

We’ve walked by here many times not realizing what a little gem this place is! We dealt with the owner who was very polite and low-key, zero high pressure. Of course he’ll try to sell you top of the line stuff (that’s his job!) but he’ll also recommend less expensive stuff without sacrificing quality. We bought a couple bottles as gifts as well as some amazing vanilla powder that is far better quality than the coffee shops have. He’s careful to explain the difference between his products and the run of the mill stuff. Great experience! If you just want vanilla, go to any one of the scores of tourist trap stands, if you want quality, come here.

Reputable Vanilla Shop
Feb 2019 • Friends
Great reputable vanilla shop. Was referred here by a local shopkeeper (not a competitor). Their prices are higher because they sell actual vanilla, not the artificial stuff you’ll find in many of the tourist shops along the Malecon (do a quick Google search and you’ll save yourself from being scammed).

Pesos trump $US
Mar 2018 • Couples
From our experience, the caution of another reviewer, Caveat Emptor, may be a good one to keep in mind when shopping at this place. Although small, it does have a decent selection of Vanilla (brands and sizes), and the lady who was looking after the place during our visit seemed reasonably knowledgeable about the products. (Given we are neophytes on the topic, this may be giving too much credit.) For us the challenge came on payment, and we would strongly suggest paying in pesos. We initially chose to pay in $US, and the exchange rate used was ~ 14 pesos per $US, when the official rate was ~ 18.7. When queried, the lady informed us that this was the rate used by all of the shops in the area and it was checked regularly. After leaving the shop we did our own checking in numerous other shops in the Zona Romantica area and the rate range for these shops was from a low of 18 to a high of 19.3. We returned to La Casa de la Vainilla and challenged the original rate, sharing our findings at the other shops. We were then advised that this rate was set by the owner, and she could do nothing. In the end, we went to an ATM, got the pesos, and she returned the $US. While we aren’t talking about a lot of money in this case, the whole thing wasted a chunk of our time and was a negative distraction from what was otherwise an interesting area with much to see. It did make us question the business ethics of the owner, hence this review.

Great Place For Quality Products
Mar 2018 • Friends
After reading a number of articles regarding the vanillas available in Puerto Vallarta, and based upon Trip Advisor comments, I decided to head straight to this place rather than waste time with others. And yes, it isn't an easy place to find even when you are close by unless you realize how small it is and exactly where to find it in relation to the Malecon. If you head along the boardwalk towards the bridges away from the Naval Museum, towards the island, look for the Parkade called Plaza Juarez. The shop is located on the opposite side of this parkade right near the Tepic exit, on Morelos, between A Rodriguez street and Encino. If you have gone past Encino you've gone too far. The reason it's so hard to find is really because it's so small and unassuming, but the products here are wonderful, and the service provided by the person on staff along with the information very good. You can actually research this place on-line before you go and get an idea of their prices. They had lots of Vanilla in various forms. I bought Orlando, my favorite, and a couple of others too. Well worth your while if looking for a good selection of quality products and are willing to spend a bit of time looking for it, because even if you park in the parkade (which we did) you can easily miss it (which I did the first time down there!)

We are very grateful for your comment and for recommending our store, for guiding people who want to buy vanilla in Puerto Vallarta, we are very selective in the products we sell because our goal is that the people who visit us get the best of México!

This store was a little hard to find but, once there, I chose a bottle from Papantla; pricey but better than Molino Real, which they also sell. Smells Wonderful!

Thank you for your comment, in the Vanilla House store we have many brands and kinds of vanilla, Molino Real is a vanilla flavoring. Papantla is named the city of the Vanilla in México, you bought the best vanilla quality. We are very happy that you have found us!
