This is my favorite place to be when it comes to soaking up the sun and enjoying a beautiful beach. I spend 3 different days on Sandy and they were all amazing. I highly reccomend getting a boat ride from Paradise Beach Club to get there. It was a super cheap $20EC if you ate at the club or $40EC per person if not. Beautiful views, super cute hermit crabs, small pools to wade in, snorkeling, palm trees, all of it!

We were told Sandy Island is a must visit during our stay in Carriacou, so we booked a trip at the boat house the first time. We got there and were dropped off, so the divers can go to their dive site. This island has the most beautiful beach I've ever visited and we had a lot of fun snorkeling and discovering the reefs and sea creatures. The best part was meeting Tim - there's a gentleman there by the name of Tim who will make you a delicious meal for a fair price. We ate lobsters and a delicious course meal prepared by Tim. We were a little sad not being able to see the sunset, because the boat crew came to pick us up after a few hours.
We enjoyed the experience in Sandy Island so much that we went back a second time - This time we arranged for Tim's crew to came pick us up, so we can stay there for the entire day. This turned out to be the best plan we made, because we had no time restrictions and could enjoy snorkeling, the beach, the sunset, and Tim's delicious meal again.
I would recommend going to Sandy Island to anyone who is visiting Carriacou and make sure you have a meal with Tim!! (Look up "Tim's Beach BBQ!")

Sandy Island was hard hit by Hurricane Beryl on July 1, 2024. In November 2024 I was able to revisit the island, primarily to check out the snorkeling, but also to be joyfully off the grid for a few hours. The vegetation from the middle of the island to the west tip is pretty much gone, but the eastern half still offers some shade. I am happy to report that the snorkeling off the east tip of the island is still very good.

We just had lunch at Tim's little beach restaurant. The setting is paradise, the only structure on this perfect beach. We expected barbecued fish. What we got was not just exquisitely prepared fish (marlin grilled over hard ash, the flavor was divine) potatoes, salad and plantains, but beautiful presentation as well. Attention to detail. And s real sweetheart of a chef. Best restaurant meal I've had in 3 months of sailing and a great value for money. Dont miss it!

Perfect sandy island adjacent to some of the best restaurants in Carriacou. Perfect yellow sand with orange and mini shells. Conch shells on one side, more sandy the snorkeling in steady waters than the other shore facing side. Recommend visits late afternoon, as there is little shade bar the odd palm.

Take a drink. An hour is enough for most people, unless an avid snorkeller.

A must-do while you’re in Carriacou!

To get there, go to Paradise Beach and find Curtis at Off The Hook bar. He’ll get you a water taxi to the island ($40EC). The island is a small, uninhabited island, great for snorkeling or just relaxing on the beach. Stay until sunset to get some great photos!

There are plenty of tropical fish just a few feet out into the water, so be sure to bring snorkel gear (and plenty of food and water for the day).

Paradise found on this little island. We walked the little island and spent just an hour or so exploring it. Definitely one to visit if your staying on Carriacou. We used the water taxi from Paradise Beach club to get there. Super easy & so worth the 5 minute boat trip!

Cost:
USD $70 round trip per person for Osprey Express (Ferry) from Grenada to Carriacou. USD $20 round trip for boat ride to Sandy Island from Carriacou.

Time:
1.5 to 2 hours by Ferry or, alternatively, 20 mins by SVG Air flight (Grenada to Carriacou)
5 mins by boat (Carriacou to Sandy Island)

Description:
Sandy island is a tiny, uninhabited, island just off Carriacou (which itself is a small island of 10,000 people off Grenada) with a 200-300 meter strip of white sand beach. The attraction is the beautiful strip of beach and the fact that the island is uninhabited. If you go, it's quite likely you will be completely alone on the island. My wife and I were in Grenada for our honeymoon and spent a few hours there one morning. It's very romantic (bring a bottle of champagne or something and you can make it an incredible moment). We also brought stuff for snorkeling. There's some pretty good snorkeling just off the western end of the island. See attached pics.

Things to keep in mind:

- There's no bathroom or anything at all on the tiny island. Bring whatever you need.
- There isn't much in the way of shade on the island (no really big trees). In a pinch you could probably find some shelter from the sun under a small tree. Something to keep in mind if you're worried about getting too much sun.
- There's a washroom/shower/change station (for $5 EC) just beside the boat launch for Sandy Island. There's also small beach bar/restaurant that serves a pretty good jerk chicken meal called the Hardwood Bar and Snacket. This is also where you can find a guy who will take you over to Sandy Island by boat (ask for him at the Hardwood).

I visited Sandy Island for an afternoon with several friends. It was fun and beautiful. We swam and did a little snorkeling. Please be cautious of the one business providing water taxis to and from the island. This business is based on Paradise Beach and is run by a man named Curtis. He charges a really high price for such a short ride, but it is kind of a monopoly as there are no other options available. (By comparison, the next day my friends and I were able to hire a local boat tour for several hours for a similar price.) Curtis was an hour late picking us back up from the island. It had gotten dark and the mosquitoes had gotten bad, but he didn't even seem concerned or apologetic about being late. When we raised our concerns about receiving poor service for such a high price, he became enraged and behaved threateningly. It was definitely an unfortunate way to end our beautiful afternoon on Sandy Island.

Sandy Island is a must on a trip to Carriacou. You can take a bus from town to Paradise Beach and hire a water taxi from Hardwood Bar. Ask to be left for a certain amount of time. And bring your snorkel gear! There is just something about being on a sandy spit surrounded by the prettiest green/blue pastel water filled with colorful fish. It's like an out of body experience. You divide your time between snorkelling and walking the length of the island in awe. It's one of those experiences that changes you.
