Clean, welcoming, friendly staff who were willing to share information on places to visit and best times for local attractions.

Had brochures available covering all types of activities, destinations, and maps.

Professionally presented history of the Owaka area, from logging to shipwrecks and railways. Interesting artifacts.

Great little museum

Not free but definitely worth a look into the history of the area. We went in during a day of rain and we’re pleased to find that it was more than just a time to use some time during a bleak day as we actually spent a lot longer than expected inside.

If you want to learn about the history of this area then this is the place to visit. It is moderately priced and really leaves one well informed about the Area and its inhabitants.
The attached information centre is very helpful.

Well presented history of the area

We had seen other reviews on Tripadvisor, so made the time to visit and were not disappointed. We were met at reception by two happy volunteers who were also friendly. The audiovisual displays add to the static displays of photos and artefacts
from Owaka and the rest of the Catlins. It was surprisingly good. Don't rush.

This small museum is extremely well designed and very interesting. Well worth a visit. Why is the area called the Catlins? Visit the museum and find out!

Worth seeing if it is open...just check
Mar 2020
We visited here over six years ago and were surprised to find such an interesting and well displayed collection of items relating to the history of the Catlins in a small town museum. They have a website which provides good information too and that is where we fell down. We didn't check online to see that at the time of our visit in March 2020 they had closed due to concern about Covid-19.

It's a shame we didn't get in this time however with less than a week until New Zealand locked down it was understandable that volunteers to keep it open were thin on the ground.

Worth going to see if you are in the area...and it is open, just check.

How lovely that you still give it 5 stars, even though you weren't able to see it this time. We closed the whole museum when we were in Level 4 lockdown. We also are closed in Level 2 just at the weekends when the volunteers are on duty, just to keep it that little bit safer. The museum is owned by the Catlins Historical Society but shared with the Clutha District Council as an information centre and library and the council rules are strict about people coming in. It's great that you enjoyed it so much the last time. Some things have been added or changed but the main exhibits of shipwrecks and saw-milling are still there. Nga mihi.
