Interesting and well presented

Great little museum staffed by volunteers who were friendly and helpful. Good use of audio visual on a limited budget and some excellent static displays.

My favorite feature was the 2 short film clips about the shipwrecks that occurred nearby. The museum had some objects on display relating to these events as well. Overall I found the museum tried its best to cover a lot of topics so I spent a long time taking in each display, however, I did not find all of them... More

We were staying in Owaka for 2 nights, so we thought we would take a look at the museum. A surprise actually in how good it was for such a small town. There are two short films played on loop about the shipwrecks that occurred locally. This was very interesting for us as it is a bit of English history.

Tiny town Owaka maybe but this is an extraordinary gem of a museum. Multimedia it promised, and it delivered. Many video testimonials from older stalwarts of the local community, tons of old photos from the Catlins area, really interesting displays and stories of local contributors to the World War efforts, and artefacts from ships wrecked off the area's rocky coastline.... Firstly this modern museum is staffed by volunteers who are helpful and knowledgeable. The wealth of local information contained in what is a relatively small building is quite amazing. The story of the Catlins is told in detail and in an interesting manner. If you are in the area this is a must.

We spent quite some time in here. We watched the mini movies which were very well done. The lady who works here was also very helpful and gave great information.

The staff in the office spent a great deal of time with us pointing out the best sights and walks that would suit us. Unfortunately we had no time left to visit the Museum
