Unfortunately this is no longer available. Very disappointing. I was looking forward to using this option so that I could explore in my own time.

I would recommend this tour if you are keen to avoid the masses, do some intrepid travel at your own pace and discover Rarotonga in a fun, and laid back way. Anne-Marie arrives at your accommodation on time and thoroughly explains the features of the player etc. Rather than using the double headsets provided I linked the mp3 player through a portable speaker which was well suited to our family as we completed the tour by car. The commentary is accurate, informative and we had a few laughs along the way. This self guided style of tour is great for people who do not wish to be cramped into a tour mini van or truck with sunburnt, mosquito bitten strangers all worrying when the next toilet break will be. The best thing of all is you start and stop when you want, grab a bite at places you not normally would stop at and discover a true laid back lifestyle of the Cook Islands. Tuts & Alicia

We decided to hire the Mai Tours MP3 player tour as although we had visited Rarotonga before, the friends we were travelling with had not. We discovered things about Rarotonga that we did not know and the tour directed us to places we would never have discovered on our own, all at no extra cost. The tour now costs $NZ45, not the $25 I was expecting based on previous Trip Advisor reviews, but was still excellent value for money. Unfortunately we did not have portable speakers that we could plug the mp3 player into, so the 2 sets of headphones were inadequate for the 4 of us. However we got around this by one person listening to the information and imparting the knowledge onto the others. The batteries on the player went flat as I accidently left it on overnight, before we had the chance to complete the tour but Anne-Marie was so lovely and replaced the batteries and let us have the player for an extra day at no charge so we could complete out tour. So our experience was slightly disappointing for 4 people as our vehicle did not have a USB plug and we did not have portable speakers, but if there was only 2 of you, or you had the right equipment this would just about rate 10 out of 10.

This is a self guided trip around the island. Travel at your own pace, stop and take pictures, have lunch at Trader Jack's, learn about 13 sites that you may wonder about if you miss this!! Good value, and delivered and picked up 24 hours later, at your door!! By a gorgeous girl too, I might add!

We did the Mai Tours self guided tour recently and greatly enjoyed it. The MP3 players are easy to use, the information is presented in a clear and entertaining manner, and being able to pace the tour yourself is a big bonus. There are quite a few places on Raro where you might like to stop a bit longer, and the organised tours don't allow for that (we also did a jungle safari 4wd type trip, which wasn't nearly as flexible or informative overall, with one or two exceptions). Cost-wise, Mai Tours was also better, with both of us able to enjoy the tour for only a third of the 4wd tour cost (for the pair of us). There aren't any entry costs to look at the places either tour takes you through, and the extra cost of the 4wd tour didn't justify against the fuel cost of the self guided tour, and it's also a great way to orient yourself to the island if you do it at the beginning of your visit. Definitely recommend the cheaper and better option of Mai Tours if you plan to do a tour!
