Traces of the history and culture of the Edo (old Tokyo) era remain vividly in Ueno and Asakusa. Spacious Ueno Park is a great place to relax and visit a variety of different museums and galleries. At Ameyoko which starts in front of Ueno station, the grocery stores and clothing shops are crammed alongside fishmongers. It gets particularly busy at the end of the year, when many people go on shopping sprees. The town of Asakusa, developed around Sensoji temple, has many shops selling goods and clothing from old Japan, making it a great place for souvenir hunting. It's also known for various annual festivals, and the whole district gets involved with the huge Sanja Festival in May.

Un-missable if you are within the Ueno vicinity, Shinobazu pond is an oasis of greenery, ever-changing but always relaxing.
From May to September, the pond is covered by Lotus leaves and flowers, beautiful!

A cool place to rest after the hectic shopping in Ameyokocho....

SHINOBAZU-NO-IKE

Shinobazu pond is a natural pond in Ueno Onshi Park where lotus flowers are in full bloom.
The area around the pond is about 1km in front of Ueno Zoo, and It is a place of relaxation where many people live in the area where they enjoy running and walking in the morning.

Shinobazu no Ike is a big pond in Ueno Park. In the middle of it, there is a small shrine which is dedicated to Benzaiten. The area of the pond is a really refreshing place. You can take a walk around, or even take a boat. In a word, it is wonderful.

Opposite of Shinobazu Pond. You see the restayrant Shinobazu tei. Actually this restaurant is a Japanese style eel cocking. But I will recommend you to try lunch box at lunch or dinner. You feel mature technique of chef with cooked seasonal vegetable and fishes at once in the box. You can see beautiful various colors. Also I recoment to have Japanese domestic Sake. The price of Matu(pine tree) is about 2000 JPY. Of course taste is excellent. From the windows, you see lotus in the pond of Shinobazu in mid Summer.

The pond has a lot of Yaezakura, double blossom Sakuras, so even after the major Sakuras are gone, you can enjoy Sakura till May. It is quite relaxing walking around this pond.

The pond is my favourite part of Ueno Park. It's a great place to go for a walk or run & you will see lots of locals and tourists doing just that. Great people watching, especially the locals out walking their dogs! Even better bird watching, lots of different kinds of water birds can be seen on & around the pond. Lovely. I saw cranes, egrets & cormorants quite close by. Lots of seats where you can have a picnic and watch the world go by.

This pond is a nice piece of open space in the city. Today it was sprinkled with peddle boats like flamingos and canoes. Everyone was having a great time. YMMV

This pond is kind of small. The view is nice and the boats are really cute shaped as birds and cars. In spring is surrounded by cherry blossoms.
