The first day upon our arrival it couldn't be more foggy but we stayed at the campsite near Nugget Point and saw the lighthouse and amazing "nuggets" the day after. One of the best landmarks in the South of New Zealand, a must do spot! Binoculars recommended - home of the seals.

Nugget Point builds its fame on penguins and sea lions. They usually love sunbathing in this isolated spot in the early morning and late evening. We unfortunately had no chance to see them because the weather was horrible. Kaka Point is a small town and a perfect stopover headquarter for visiting the more famous Nugget Point instead of Balchuta. Kaka... More

To get there you drive along the coast from Balclutha and the road gets rough and rougher until you are sure it can't get worse. Then it gets better. There is about a kilometer hike over to the lighthouse. Great views along the way, you can hear the seals barking down below on the rocks and see gannets and gulls... More

Great place to visit on your trip, as it offers stunning views of the cliffs, lighthouse and seals. The short walk is definitely worth it!

The walk has amazing views scattered along the way you will need to keep your children close by and hold their hands when walking in some sections as there is no rails and it is a sheer drop over the side. You would not go to this location specifically to see the Sea Lions as they are a long way... More

Really nice view and that's about all but what else you need? We came across the place by accident and had no expectations and were stunned by the view.

Along the way and at the tip. Easy walking, would be great with you g kids as well. We saw seals and some penguins from afar. Worth while to bring binoculars. Delightful views of the ocean and the rocks and the seaweed dancing in the water. Baby seals playing in a pool etc.

It was a bitter, rainy, windy, furious ocean day and driving along the Southern Scenic Route was less than inviting. I decided that if I had to get wet and frozen, then this scenic attraction was the one for that sacrifice. I was not disappointed, what a view both up and down the coast. The nugget rocks and lighthouse were... More

The road to the hide is rough and under construction. Parking above the hide is limited. Best time to see the penguins is an hour before sunset. Check with the locals if the penguins will be coming in at the time of your visit. The locals we met were very proud of the penguins and eager for you to share... More

We went fortunate that it was not too windy the day we visited. The is walkway requires an average fitness; there are a steps to tackle on the way to and from the Point. Apart from this it is a lovely walk to the Nugget Point. Spectacular scenery.
