Beautiful on a windless, sunny, early winters day.
Apr 2021 • Couples
Rode our e bikes from Kaka Point on a lovely windless, sunny day. Beautiful as the sun reflected off the water. At the car park at Nugget Point we walked to the lighthouse. Gravel walkway with some share drops to the ocean below. At the light house there are viewing platforms over the cliffs so you can get a great view of the surrounding area. Plenty of room at the car park for Campervan’s or caravan to park and turn around and also toilets available.

Nice walk to Nugget Point. Awesome views. Recommend that you take binoculars or telephoto lens to see the sea Lions on the rocks out at sea

Nice walk with a view or nice views with a walk ... you decide.
Feb 2021
We get there about 10am to find quite a few cars already. The walk to the lighthouse surprisingly is mainly down hill. The weather was lovely which made the walk very pleasant. We only spotted one seal in the water and none on land, but did see some kayakers. Once at the lighthouse the view gets even better.

Must see place on Southern Scenic Route
Mar 2020
We enjoy a lighthouse visit. It's seldom that you can get into the tower (there is no access here at Tokata Lighthouse) but by their very nature they are often located in scenic, remote spots and this is no exception in that regard.

The last time we visited some years ago the road was unsealed which added to the adventure however nowadays it is sealed right out to the car parking area, about 15 minutes drive from the small town of Kaka Point.

From the car park the well maintained path follows the cliffs but at points it is unfenced so if you are accompanying young children and/or dogs it would be best to keep a hold of them since it is a long drop to the rocks below.

As we headed towards the lighthouse we kept a lookout on the left hand side, way below, where again we were happy to observe the fur seal colony. With binoculars and the camera zoom lens it was good to watch some of them playing in pools of water between the rocks. To the naked eye they are quite difficult to spot.

About 10 minutes from the car park when the lighthouse first came into view it was a picture postcard moment. It remains one of the most iconic spots in The Catlins and Southern Scenic Route in my opinion. Great photos looking towards the lighthouse, which is not tall, and from the viewing area at the lighthouse itself looking on to the Nuggets (the rocky outcrops offshore). These were apparently named by Captain Cook who thought they resembled nuggets of gold.

I see from the internet that some hardy souls have managed to get photos from the high point to the right of the path as you walk out however I'm not too sure how they got up there. There is a property between the lighthouse and the car park so possibly a track from there but it's not a ridge I'd like to be on at sunset!

From the safety of the official viewing area we stood watching out to sea for quite a while and it was only when I was looking through the binoculars that I spotted seals perched high up on The Nuggets. Lots of them clinging to the rocks in what looked like almost a suicidal mission. It's amazing that such cumbersome creatures on land had managed to climb such heights and for what purpose? I was entranced, almost expecting one to make a wrong move and tumble far below into the sea however it didn't happen.

On the way back we stopped off at the small car park and wandered down the track to the Penguin hide overlooking Roaring Bay. Sadly we didn't see any yellow-eyed penguins which are apparently becoming even more rare than before.

We were staying nearby at Kaka Point however my wife was not attracted by the prospect of driving back out to the lighthouse in the evening for sunset or just to see the light in action from the coastal approach road. The Point, the local pub with food and drinks seemed for some reason to be a better attraction! Maybe next time.

A must if you are in the Catlins...
Aug 2020
Easy to find - toilets - track is easy walking - less than 30 minutes there to walk - you can see seals on the rocks on the left hand side walking towards the lighthouse - the lighthouse is lovely, you can only walk around under the base, the lighthouse its self is fenced off - spectacular views - we would highly recommend this walk....

No good if you suffer from panic attacks
Mar 2020
This is a very popular place, and having overcome the narrow road in our camper van, we then had the issue of trying to find somewhere to park in the carpark. Not a good spot so we did the first short walk to the cliff lookout. Then started on the walk to the lighthouse and Nugget Point, but as soon as I saw the sign about the exposed path and the need to take care, I knew that I wouldn't be able to cope with it as I suffer from panic attacks on that sort of path.

BEAUTIFUL PLACE, WHATEVER THE WEATHER
Feb 2020
Going to Nugget Point Lighthouse added an extra 70 kms to our trip but this was definitely worth it.
The winding road leading there was nice to drive, with the foggy ambience building up along the way.
And after a 15 minutes walk, arriving at the lighthouse revealed a beautiful scene, quite picturesque. The rugged coast, the mini-archipelago ("the nuggets"), the immense and wild Pacific Ocean and the crushing waves below all make for a great moment.
Conclusion: a truly beautiful spot of the Catlins Coast.
