We took the cobblestone walk up (steep but not impossible) and the dirt path down (narrow path, loose ground). As others have said the castle is nothing special. The views are spectacular. No view really from cobblestone path on way up but some on the...More

This is worth the hike up for the beautiful views of the lake below. The grounds are very pretty and we especially liked the papier mache "ghosts" scattered about. I read that they slowly deteriorate over the year due to rain and snow and are...More

Enjoyed an hour of walking around the grounds of the "castle" Most are in ruins. The cost is very reasonable [3 euros for seniors].

We were so upset. Took an hr. To reach there and found it was close. They should open for public in case any tourists climb up there.More

First thing we did reaching Varenna off the navetta was to head for the castello. False start following the roadsign - but found eventually found the footpath off via Venini. Don't be fooled by the "20 minute walk claim", it is at least 30, fitness-challenging,...More

We decided last minute to do this hike! So glad we did! It is not like hiking from Monterosso to Vernazza but it is a bit of a steep hike! Bring water! There is a cafe by the castle and the views are amazing! Many...More

You'd have difficulty finding anywhere in Italy that isn't charming in it's own way, especially around Lake Como, but for me Varenna is the prettiest. For the best views, visit the Castello. You have 2 routes. Do yourself a favour and take the longer route...More

We walked up from Varenna to visit the castle and admire the views, and loved the experience. There is written information about the history of the castle in English; we found the details to be fascinating. We were advised to visit in the morning before...More

Hi there, I've only found one reference to the height which was 383metres. Doesn't sound much but it's a steep hike, but well worth it when you get your breath back!

I’m sure you can get there by Taxi. There is a village close by, with just a short walk up the path to the castle. It only takes 20 minutes walking from Varenna, but it is a steep uphill walk. Take a cab if you have health... More

You might find it difficult to navigate the narrow streets that maze around the castle but you can always park up somewhere close to the castle and walk from there.
