The area
Neighbourhood: West Central District/ North District
The West Central District is the most populous and the busiest area. A lot of shops and hotels crowd the district, and the long-standing history results in a variety of street food. In addition to that, this district also has the highest number of temples. This is how it got the name “Tainan’s Pantheon.” Historic buildings are literally ubiquitous. For example, Hayashi Department Store, National Museum of Taiwan Literature, Confucius Temple, Chihkan Tower (formerly Fort Provintia), Sacrificial Rites Martial Temple, Tainan Grand Mazu (name of a goddess) Temple, etc. Recently, the tourism in Tainan has laid emphasis on alleys and lanes. Examples include Fujhong Street specialising in creative handicrafts, as-you-stroll desserts on Jhengsing Street, Shennong Street lined with hundred-year-old ancient houses, Sinyi Street on which the old city gate stands, Sinmei Street where old and new cultures fuse together, and Guohua Street and Baoan Raod famous for all the savoury food. All the traditional and delicious food and flavours are about to burst in your mouth.
The North District, on the other hand, is a quiet secret hideaway. Lane 321 on Gongyuan Road used to be a Japanese soldiers’ dormitory. Now a few artists have set up their studios here. There are diversified art styles in each old Japanese-style house. The Garden Night Market on Haian Road is one of the famous night markets in both Tainan and Taiwan, and was the top 12 Facebook check-in location worldwide in 2013.

No. 1 building of the Tainan Art Museum is worth a visit, although the No. 2 building is the real star. No. 1 building had some great works upstairs, and the coffee shop with tables under the stunner of a banyan tree is a real treat.
I have marked it down one star for the lack of English interps on the building redevelopment. I get that we’re in Taiwan, but you need to consider whether you are catering to tourists, or not.

This is Building No. 1 according to the museum. It is currently showing an excellent exhibition on the work of Taiwanese/Japanese artist Wong Kun-De and his best known work, the Platform. There's also a video discussing conservation techniques with a focus on the aforementioned painting.

The fine art museum has 2 buildings, the old police station is also known as #1 building, and #2 is 2 streets away. The entrance fee is TWD$150 for both buildings.
This museum has the Formosa painting in display now and it was stunning. The building itself is historical but that’s about it. I like the exhibits in #2 more.

It's former police station but now becomes a museum. When I visited, only saw the local artwork, not really creative but the content was local topics. You enjoy the spacious interior especially the centre garden and the elegant main stairs, but the entrance hall is modern design. Honestly, not many exhibits but a good place for leisure walk in a historical building with free entrance.

The Tainan Fine Arts Museum Building 1 building was originally the Tainan Police Station built in the Japanese era. It is a two-story European-style building. The exterior walls are made of yellow-brown bricks. There are many strips of carved decorations on the balconies and roofs, making the building a little more stable and simple. Visual changes. There is a large staircase in the lobby on the first floor. Many Japanese-era government buildings have this pattern. Mr. Yan Shuilong's tile mosaic work "Tropical Plants", known as the treasure of the Tainan Art Museum, is hung in the first-floor exhibition hall. There are no furnishings or exhibitions in the main hall on the second floor, and the door to the external balcony is also closed. In the center of the atrium of the first building, there is a large banyan tree covered with aerial roots. There are flower beds surrounding the tree, and there are a few seats with parasols. However, it is too hot during the day in summer and is not suitable for sitting for a long time. There is an additional venue behind the original police station. The main exhibitions are in the newly built building. Tickets for the first and second halls are common and can be visited together.
