Wei at Meet My Guide was a great resource for our first trip to Taiwan. He was very responsive to our initial inquiry and again and again as we had detailed questions. Wei set us up with Vincent for an English speaking guided one-day tour of Taroko Gorge National Park. Vincent is terrific. He has worked in the area as an environmental engineer and is now a skilled and enthusiastic guide. He is very skilled at being in the right place at the right time to get the best pictures and to avoid crowds. We only wish we had planned to have three days in the park with Vincent. Wei’s detailed advice on travel to Haulien from Taipei using the combo ticket worked smoothly even on the eve of the Chinese New Year. In hindsight we would have done more of our planning with Wei and will do so if we return some day. Wei also coordinated taxi service to Ian's Table. Ian's Table is away from the city but our group was delighted with the fine dining in a casual setting. Ian and Sabine's food and service were very thoughtful and I would recommend putting Ian's Table on your list of restaurants when visiting Hualien.February 2017

My partner and I went to Hualien for a week of hiking. We booked Meet My Guide for the hiking in Datong and Dali area in Taroko National Park. It was two days hike with one night spent in an aboriginal accommodation.
The whole experience is very pleasant and hassle free: Wei, our guide, picked us up from our hotel in the morning before the trip started. He knows the route well, arranged the permit for us and also kindly prepared some snacks for the journey.
The hike was challenging but fun. You would see many beautiful mountain landscape, have the chance to dip into the rock pool for a swim, chat with local/aboriginal people, see the stunning sunset and sunrise close to the accommodation, not mention the delicious home-cooked dinner and breakfast!
If you enjoy hiking and wants to experience the national park more than the typical landmark, it is a must-do!

We took a day trip from Taipei to Hualien and Taroko Gorge. After reading reviews on Trip Advisor, we reached out to several tour operators to check availability. Wei with Taiwan Classic Tour was extremely responsive as we were exploring our options. He replied quickly and answered many questions to help us plan our visit. An important note: not very many tour operators can accommodate parties of more than four, but Wei has a van and can carry up to eight guests. We had originally booked for six, and he happily accommodated my cousin who decided to join us (as a seventh) at the last minute. His van was clean and comfortable and had seatbelts for everyone.
Wei met us right on time at Hualien Station and promptly honored a request to get breakfast. The place he recommended was a small eatery that prepared takeaway breakfast crepes that are popular street eats in Taiwan. They were scrumptious!
Wei recommended that we avoid the crowds by traveling through Taroko National Park on a route opposite that of the standard tour operators. It worked perfectly. Most places we went, we did not encounter very many people at all, and we were able to cover more ground in the short time that we had. We started off at the Cimu Bridge, then proceeded to the Baiyang Water Curtain, followed with lunch at the Wenshan Hot Springs, took a walk through Swallow Grotto, and finished the day with the short drive to the Qingshui Cliffs. It was all so beautiful and worth the trip.
Upon returning to Hualien, Wei dropped us off at a restaurant he recommended that was within walking distance to the train station. There, we were able to get a wonderful dinner before catching our express train back to Taipei.
Wei was a terrific tour guide. He is an experienced backpacker and spends a lot of time hiking the trails in the park, so his knowledge of the terrain and features was extensive and appreciated.
Our group ranged in ages from 13 to 78, with some speaking only a little Mandarin and one who speaks very little English. Wei switched between English and Mandarin frequently and clearly articulated historical and geological information about the park in both languages. He was very flexible as a guide and adjusted the itinerary based on our pace. We never felt rushed and still covered many sites. Wei also provided assistance for my mom as we navigated stairs to the hot springs and the wet, slipper pathways to the Water Curtain. He was entertaining and fun to chat with. One of the things we really appreciated about Wei was his obvious love for the outdoors and his desire for the preservation of Taroko National Park. We were extremely pleased with our experience, and we are happy to recommend his services to other potential customers.

It was raining when we started our tour.... and is the very 1st time that i hike on a rainy day!!! Awesome! However Wei is a very tactful person which put safety in the 1st priority during the whole hike and show his professionalism in introducing the amazing Taroko Gorge. A passionate guide indeed!

Hi Joey,
Thanks for your review here. It was a pity that I didn't get the chance to show you the hidden spots because of the rain. But thanks for being so optimistic, hopefully you can come back next time. All my best to your future on your work and take care.

Bad experience with this company, who is too overly cautious. Have booked a river tracing tour around Hualien through this Company. They cancelled my tour and refund me a few days before due to bad weather. However, the weather was superb on the tour day and a few days before. They did not try at all to help me find another service provider and it was quite difficult to find another service provider, as their competitors were all full on that day.

Hi Alvin. I’m sorry to see this. As I explained to you, the weather forecast was very bad, even thunderstorms for the whole week, so we took the initiative to cancel and refund right away. We operate our tour based on the weather forecast, no one can be 100% sure if the weather turns out ok ON THE DAY. It’s not overly cautious, it’s river tracing and it relates to the water volume on the upstream, which accumulates easily by a typhoon and will not turn back to the normal and safe volume in a few days. As professionals, we take the safety issue very seriously and we do not take the risk if there’s a potential danger. If you don’t like it, it’s fine.
And I’m sorry to tell you that it’s not our fault if other providers were all full during your visit. And you can’t take it for granted that we HAVE TO find you another service. There’s a product called Google.
We think your one star rating is unreasonable and unfair. We are proud of the way we handled it.

We had a one-day trek with ever friendly and approachable Wei who made the trip for us very smooth and easy. Here are three words to describe our wonderful experience:
1) Fun - this trail is refreshing and exciting at the same time
2) Safety - Wei ensures we wear our helmets, in case of falling rocks and constantly looked out for us as we trekked across the narrow trail
3) Experienced - Wei has done this trail many times and was able to educate us on the history of not only the trail but also Taiwan. He was also able to anticipate our enquiries and took initiative to book rooms for us in advance, knowing that it's last minute and high in demand.
Highly recommend to those who would want a unique taste of Taroko

We had a wonderful day with Wei. He was waiting at our cruise ship right on time; has a new, clean, comfortable suv-type car; speaks English VERY well; really listened to what we wanted to get from our day with him; and took us to some extra places so we could get good photos. Spending the day with Wei was perfect for our day in the port of Hualien. If we ever go back to Taiwan (and we would like to do so), we would hire Wei again to show us more of that beautiful area of his country.

Did 2 tours with this company as was travelling solo/first time in Taiwan and wanted to do some hiking. Taroko is not suitable for exploring on your own on foot, so it’s much easier to at least have a driver to take you to the trails.
Did the classic tour, which involved the main sites and some light ‘hiking’. That was with Alan who is very chatty.
Then did the Zhuilu old trail, this involves about 2kms worth of stairs through the forest, then the scenic trail at the top, then back down. About 4 hours overall if you’re not rushing.
Trail is clean and well maintained.
Guide was Cloud whose english is a bit more limited but ok.

Booked a full-day tour with Wei. Very reasonable price and excellent communication ahead of time via email, with arrangement for pick up at hotel.
We could not have enjoyed our day more: Wei knows where to go and when to go (so the trails and viewpoints are quiet, away from the tour bus hordes) and included in his itinerary are some of the less well-known spots like some fabulous hot springs. He took the time to gauge our interests and abilities on the first hike and then tailored the rest of the day so we would get the most out of it -- excellent choices!
Friendly guy with great English and a real passion for the outdoors. You won't find anyone more knowledgeable or more fun to go with. Highly recommended.

Hi need some wisdom please. Interested in Hualien tours but cannot decide whether to do everything from Taipei or stay in Hualien, Taitung and Tainan. Travelled all over the world but finding clarity is all of this has been tricky. Like scenery, waterfalls, mountain views. Seen T Gorge and S M Lake in Taiwan and liked the reviews. Fiinding trains difficult too and I leave in 2 weeks!!! Not usually this disorganised. Fliss

Hi Sangeet! I'm also looking to do this tour with my sister. How much was the total? Which sites did you visit and would you recommend having a tour guide versus doing it yourself?
Thanks so much!

Hello! I am considering a trip to Taroko Gorge and guided tour with Meet My Guide, and I notice there is pick-up and drop-off at hotels in Hualien City. If I were to stay in a house rental just outside of town, would you be able to pick my party up there even though it isn't a hotel in Hualien City? Thank you!

Hi,
Thanks for asking. Would you mind sharing the address of your hotel/bnb? If it's not far from the city, there's no extra charge.
Thanks,

Hello,
I'm wanting to book a day tour for my husband and I but want to bring our 7 month old son. I noticed on the website it says recommended 2 years and older. Is it still possible to book a tour? We are quite fit and good to hike with him so just wondering if still ok. We are coming during Mid-Autumn Festival so want to book while still available. Thanks
