About
Around the year 980, King Harald Bluetooth built several Viking fortresses in Denmark – Fyrkat is one of those we know today. The old fortresses no longer exist, but they were built at a time when Denmark was united into a single kingdom, and the unique history of the fortresses have made them candidates for a place in UNESCO’s world heritage list. At Fyrkat, a natural sized rampart marks the original location of the Viking fortress, which encircled 16 large longhouses. One of these longhouses has been reconstructed and is open to visitors. Not far from the fortress you may also visit a number of houses which in combination constitute a reconstructed nobleman’s estate from the Viking Age. On most days during the summer season, Vikings will demonstrate old handicrafts and organise activities for families to join in.

We took a tour here as part of a day trip off of a cruise ship. Both my husband and I (54 yrs) really enjoyed it. The scenery around the fortress is beautiful and the wondering goats adorable. There are costumed artisans showing how things were made by the Vikings and many of their wares are for sale. The long house was very interesting to tour. There are washrooms at the site and it was very easy to walk around.

We absolutely loved this visit thank you! You all took the time to explain and share your extensive knowledge about the everyday lives of the vikings. We had such a warm welcome and felt comfortable to ask questions. Making fire, learning about cooking, wool making, trying a bit of archery and so much more, we highly recommend this visit!

We visited the village and then the ring fortress which were both very interesting especially for seeing how the vikings lived and how the king began his fortification process. The ticket gives entry into both displays and also the Hobro museum so good value.

Viking Center Fyrkat is a beautifully located reconstruction of Viking Age settlement consist of several long houses. In every house includes equipment which was based on the finds from 9th to 10th centuries. One long hose is dedicated to the presentation of Viking Age female and male clothing.

About 2 km from the Viking Center Fyrkat is located Viking ring fortress. In my opinion reconstruction of Viking Age long house of Trelleborg-type, remains of cemetery and reconstructed ring fortress are very impressive. Complex in Fyrkat is a perfect place to walk and to learn more about Viking Age. It is worth noting that students and PhD of archaeology have free admission to the Viking Center Fyrkat, Viking ring fortress and Museum in Hobro.

In my opinion the whole complex in Fyrkat is really worth visiting!

Great to experience a wonderfully reconstructed Viking Fortress and Farm.

Loved to watch the authentic woodworking craftsman.

Guide showed us the making of Viking era clothing.

Great educational experience.

Learned that 98% of Vikings were farmers.

Only 2% of Vikings were world explorers.

Vikings famous for building “longhouse” buildings surrounded by earth berms and wooden fortress “palisade.”

Viking tools and artifacts found in eastern Canada.

Can’t help but wonder if the Iroquois
Tribes of Canada and what is now the eastern United States learned this architectural design from the Vikings to build their own longhouses and palisades.

The Iroquois in more recent times became known as “People of the Longhouse.”

Visited the reconstructed farm and the fort on a guided tour. The farm gave insight into day-to-day Viking life. The fort provided a better understanding of Harold's push for unification and local resistance. The staff was pleasant and engaging.

The ring fortress is wonderfully atmospheric and a great opportunity to understand the significance of the modern meaning of the term ‘bluetooth’.
The village recreation is interesting, too, although it has the potential to be even better if the re-enactors were more proactive and energetic in their activities, perhaps helping maintain the site as the Vikings themselves would have done. As it was, most were rather sedentary and non-productive.

The fyrkat entry has three components - the outdoor reconstruction, the former fortress, and the downtown museum. The reconstruction is interesting and I enjoyed speaking with the Vikings. The fortress had no one there except a bunch of goats (environmental lawn mowing) and provided great views of the western end of the fjord. I did not have time for the museum.
