About
The Castello dei Vicari is situated on a hill that was inhabited from ancient times. The first document relating to its existence dates back to 1043 when a plot of land belonging to the Castle of Lari was sold for a sword. It was the site of the Pisan captaincy between the 12th and 14 th centuries, but came to prominence after it was captured by Florence in the 15th century and became the site of a Vicariate overseen by Florence. Despite the many alterations, modifications and overlaps that were made to the fortress, visitors can still see in its present aspect the many ways that it was used: as a fortress, prison, home of the Vicar with his "family" and court. To name only the most important ones, since the most observant and enquiring visitors will not miss the more ancient archaeological traces and the other less apparent aspects which are just as important and contribute to making the Castle of Lari a rare if not unique example of its kind in Tuscany and beyond. The museum route inside the Castello dei Vicari (the Castle of the Vicars) has a new layout creating a whole new visit in which technology is combined with an illustrated and educational system that takes you on a discovery of a fortress that was the centre of control in Medici Tuscany and home to a Florentine vicariate for over four centuries. The users take the lead and decide what they want to take a closer look at and how to interact with the numerous multimedia applications along the route through the use of multi-touch tablets, multimedia educational games, holographic figures in period costume and multiple projections. A story and a journey of discovery suited to even very young children thanks to the short films and dedicated applications.

Nice tour along the town, even nicer the visit to the castle
Sep 2021
Lari , especially in its central part, preserves some peculiar features (such as a church for prisoners), difficult to find elsewhere. I also highly recommend a visit to the castle, with several multimedia stations very well done and interesting about life in the era of castles.

Beautiful little town right next to our resort ( San Ruffino Resort ) Very picturesque town and very charming. We walked right up to the Martelli pasta factory and were asked if we wanted a tour, ofcourse we did! What wonderful pasta! Seemed like everywhere nearby we ate it was Martelli pasta! We even brought some home.
The castle was closed the day we were there for some work being done but, we still loved this little town.

Great castle!

This castle was one of the best places I've visited in Tuscany!
Outside we can see such an amazing view of Lari and the other cities nearby.
I’ve loved the prisons and the coat of arms of the castle. The people in charge are really nice and welcoming. I will definitely come back!

beautiful little Tuscan town and castle

Came here for the Martelli family pasta factory as I had contacted them to arrange a visit. Met by Luca who was busy and asked us to come back in a short while so we had a walk round this small town and up to the castle. It was wonderful, only a handful of tourists and it was so quiet and peaceful. The town is very quaint and the views from the castle are great. Whilst walking there a local lady asked us what we were doing there which seemed a bit cheeky but it turned out that there was a band playing there that evening and she thought we were members of it! We went back to the Pasta factory and Luca kindly showed us around. It is family run and only employees a few people. It is small and it did not take long to be shown round however if you visit Lari, which you should if you are in the area, email them and arrange a visit.

Well worth a visit, interesting and a lovely village
Apr 2019 • Couples
If you’re in the area, the castle is worth a visit. It’s only 4 euros to enter. It’s really interesting and the views are beautiful. There is a bathroom and a small gift shop. The castle is small but worth an hour to look at. There are several nice cafes on the staircase to the entrance and several other cafes and trattorias in the very sweet and traditional village.

Great little castle in the cross fire between Florence and Pisa, explains the whole middle age history in short time
Apr 2019
Very nice pro-active media material for the kids and audio to rent in various languages. Very acceptable price. Seeing this castle the whole medioeval history and fights between Pisa and Florence comes to life. Educative material. Do not forget to realize there are Etruscan walls and exit tunnels underneath the castle and all of the town with it's Etruscan origins.

Interesting museum with fabulous views
Sep 2018 • Family
The museum offers an interesting insight into why Lari is as it is, from it's beginnings to the 20th century . It's history is laid our briefly in Italian and English with interactive sections to keep everyone interested.
Remember to have a walk around outside as the views it offers of Tuscany are absolutely fabulous.

Great castle with information displays, videos and tour guides in English and Italian. Cost our family €12 and with every cent. Amazing views and provided a great insight into the rich history of the region.

A must see Castle
Aug 2017 • Family
We were absolutely amazed by the way that this has been done and how informative and interesting it is, all for the cost of 4 euro each. It tells the history by both visual tables selecting your relevant language to read all about it and in some by watching a video. The views are fantastic. A really well done attraction and a lovely town to wander around. Definately recommended.
