Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

The "Stupa" at the entrance was enormous! Wonderfully painted and radiating positivity. The main temple was a joy to see - the handpainted original Tibetan Buddhist paintings and statues were very intriguing.

In the main house there is a sweet little shop and library and it was nice to have a cup of tea with the volunteers and staff - it was all very open and relaxed. Welcoming to visitors.

I have been a regular visitor to Mahamudra Centre over the past dozen years and it's always a joy to return. It is a Buddhist centre in the Tibetan tradition associated with the Dalai Lama. It welcomes all visitors (except those times in the quiet season when a closed retreat is in progress -- call ahead or see its Facebook page if you want to check, but it's always open during daylight hours in summer). It is a beautiful and peaceful setting, with gardens, statues and wetlands you can wander around. There's a small shop in the main building, offering excellent books on Buddhism and meditation, plus authentic Tibetan incense and other ritual items and cards. Plus you can make yourself a cuppa. The teaching hall (called the "gompa") has been the location for some teachings from some very remarkable teachers and some powerful retreats over decades and all that positive energy is palpable. There's usually a resident teacher there during the extended summer teacher so you'll likely see Western nuns around (easy to identify, in their red robes) and your questions are welcome. Usually there are free led meditations in the morning and there is a programme of events and teachings during the summer, some of which are appealing and relevant even if you're aren't Buddhist.

I have stayed at the centre on two occasions and found it to be a peaceful retreat
from Auckland.
Handy to the wonderful beaches and very affordable.
Check it out as its well worth the drive.
