We wanted to go to the elephants orphanage but our tuk tuk driver told us to go here because “it is better” BUT IT IS NOOOT!! It is expensive we had to pay 8000 rupies but they try to sell for more. Even that is expensive. 40€ for 20 min!! Wtf! We were inside for 20 minutes. The place is a disaster,i would agree with all the coments on this site, be smart and dont go it is not worth the money!! And the elephants are in bad condition.. And they told us that we will see a lot of elephants but we saw only two. Again,WE DO NOT RECOMMEND THIS PLACE(prison)!!

Although initially charming the Elephant Village is quite a horrific place and for those with morals it leaves you quite gutted in the end once you realize it was all a bit false, elephants are not treated very well at all.

There was nothing more than a parking lot with elephants chained for long periods of time in the heat, waiting for the next tourist to come along. Wounds can clearly be seen. The elephants are fearful of the keepers. Which again was heartbreaking. The elephants are constantly shouted at...it's relentless. They can hardly move without being shouted at and threatened with the bull hook or stick. Knowing that these elephants live in chains so short they can't move, day after day, night after night, never roaming free is devastating. Despite being told they roam free at night.....I find this highly unlikely! Which again, is heartbreaking. I saw 4 elephants. They told me they had 7 in total. You can never unsee such sadness in one's eyes. These beautiful creatures must be moved to a place where they can actually live and enjoy the rest of their days. This place is very much off the radar. Only locals will take you here and it doesn't have a website. This place needs to be brought to light, which is what I'm trying to do. This place has no connection to the Government-run sanctuary which is a 15 minutes drive away. These beautiful, voiceless animals need help as a matter of urgency. They need OUT of this HELLHOLE.

My wife and I were taken to the Elephant Village by our taxi driver, en route from Galle to Kandy after we mistakenly said we would like to see some elephants. What a horrible and upsetting experience. The elephants were chained up and badly mistreated by a group of pushy and aggressive locals. Please please don’t visit this awful place. We both left feeling guilty that we weren’t able to stop this horrible exploitation of these beautiful creatures.

Big and heavy chains, ridding elephants... this is more like horror movie than an attraction and thing to do, better not to do...
