The ruins are worth the visit. Fantastic views over the Pfalz, however, I would not eat at the place. We waited over an hour for some simple bratwurst and kraut. Everyone else had the same problem. When asked where the food was, we were told "if everyone keeps asking, it's just going to take longer.

The ruin of Madenburg is one of the biggest and oldest castle in Palatinate region. Built sometimes in 1000 to 1076 by Counts of Madenburg. In 1525 during the Peasant's War, the castle was damaged but rebuilt several times. Around 1689 the French troops destroyed the castle, it was not rebuilt since.

This past Saturday my wife and I with our dogs hiked up to the Madenburg ruins. We parked just off of the main road in Eschbach, Germany which is on the German wine road. The hike up took us roughly 35 minutes from where we parked in town. It is a steady climb, but not bad if you are taking your time. The view from the castle ruins is fantastic in all directions which is something I liked. We explored the castle and then enjoyed a cold weinschorle (wine mixed with mineral water) before walking back down the hill. The people in the restaurant were friendly, and we thoroughly enjoyed the view from our outside table. The visit made for a great day along the German Wine Road.

Went here during the fall when the colors were amazing. From the top of the castle you get great views of the surrounding countryside, when the vineyards are an assortment of colors. We hiked along the trail (.5 mile or so) to the castle, picking up chestnuts along the way. Lots of fun. Food at the restaurant was good, too. When the weather is nice, this is a pleasant outdoor experience.

Lovely forest walk leading to the top where this castle ruin (dating from 1076 possibly) sits. The ruin has a variety of styles of architecture due to its use throughout the following centuries until it was blown up by troops of Louis XV in 1680. Wonderful views over the surrounding countryside. Nicely staffed bar/restaurant with beer and sausage to reward hungry hikers. Spectacular view from the tower especially.
