Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Very powerful experience. An adventure worth the early morning start. Rugged ATV carts you right up to the site just as the sky begins to glow. Watch the sun peek over the horizon and colour the mountains nearby. Learn the legends of maoridom and about the construction and placement of these giant pou. Informative fun and impressive.

The very first place to see the sun, steeped in Māori Legend. Our host ‘Monty Manuel’ was so knowledgeable and enthusiastic and showed us such manaakitanga. What a truely special trip. Thank you for sharing ‘Ngati Porou’s’ sacred Maunga with us.

Day tour: What an awesome trip. We were met by Eddy, lovely bloke. Driven thru some stunning back country NZ. Onto a farm where we changed to off road vehicle. Terrain was spectacular and we are Kiwi's! Arriving at the top, planting a fern, looking at the carvings and views. But what made it special was all the information that Eddy provided. All the detail that we would have missed if it wasnt for his narrative. I found all the Maori legend fascinating. Afterwards, a lovely bite to eat and then headed back down. I thought it was great value for money considering the approx 4 hours involved. I would recommend to anyone traveling around East Cape to experience this very cool experience and support local business

The Te Urunga-Tu-Sunrise tour (7/1/2021) is the best adventure. I have been Up North, the South Island and other countries, but this experience is incomparable. It is amazing to wait and see the sunrise, we can always view it in any parts of the world - this tour top it all.
Monty is very helpful with all our planning and Eriha shared his knowledge of the place cultural history. Thank you to both of you.

This was one of the highlights of our holiday on the East Coast. A very special morning, the sunrise was spectacular but learning about the pou and the local iwi, Ngāti Porou from our guide Eriha was a gift. We were even more fortunate as local kaumata, Rangi Ngarimu accompanied us and his knowledge was extensive.

It was so well organised and Monty was in contact with us constantly in the lead up to us going, despite the fact he had time off as he had a special whanau gatehring. He bent over backwards to ensure we got to go, as there wasn't a tour scheduled on the day we were in Ruatoria. Incredible dedication and customer experience.

Every New Zealander should do this and learn more about our rich cultural history. I can't recommend it highly enough.

Nga mihi nui Monty, Eriha and Rangi

My husband and I have just done the early morning sunrise tour. It was a very special experience for us and we would highly recommend it to everyone. We were met in nearby Ruatoria at 4am by one of our guides, Eriha, and taken to the base of the Maunga where our other guide, Israel was waiting with the all terrain quad to take us up the Maunga to where the poles of Maui and his whanau reside. The sunrise was beautiful. We then heard the stories and legends of Maui, and we allowed to take photos. We were given a native harakeke to plant on the maunga and a koha (gift). We then were treated to a nice breakfast presented within a flax basket.Thank you Israel and Eriha for sharing your knowledge and aroha with us.

In March our group had a busy weekend experiencing the special place of Mt Hikurangi. We walked up the farm track from the carpark, arriving at the carvings at the same time as our Ngati Porou guide, Ngarimu. He gave us an informative and interesting talk about the carvings, and the history of Ngati Porou - both distant and recent. Everyone in the group was very impressed.
After that we continue up the hill to their hut, where we stayed on Saturday night, with time in the afternoon for many of us to climb to the two peaks of Hikurangi.
The next morning was clear, so some spectacular views were had of the sunrise from the hut and on the carvings
