About
The Museum of Australia's oldest surviving and most decorated Regiment. Guided by a retired Lancer, discover the history of mainland Australia's oldest military barracks and its oldest and most decorated Regiment, the 1st/15th Royal NSW Lancers. Hear about the wars in which it has fought and its glittering ceremonial history as Australia's Vice-Regal Escort. View the development of the Regiment's uniforms, equipment, means of communication on the battlefield, combat rations and weapons, from the days of horse and lance in the Boer War, through Gallipoli and Palestine as Light Horse in WW1, the tanks it used to mount Australia's largest ever armoured assault in WW2 to its role as armoured reconnaissance today. Inspect a rare example of the worlds first sub-machine gun, an even rarer example of the worlds first anti-tank weapon and, maybe, see the world from inside one of our heritage armoured fighting vehicles, most of which have been restored to full mobility.

My wife and I visited Lancer Barracks Museum earlier this week and have no hesitation in recommending this heritage location to anybody interested in military history or Australian Colonial History. We were given a very informative and entertaining guided tour of the museum and surrounding grounds by a volunteer guide which took over two hours.
There are some very important and rare military items on display and all the exhibits are displayed in a very professional manner. The colonial buildings in the grounds go back as far as 1820 and are in excellent condition. There also a number of rare and restored military vehicles adjacent to the main museum. Strongly recommended.

Personal tour of the Museum
Nov 2019
By virtue of the fact I was in Parramatta outside of normal visits (Sundays) I opted for an individual visit. It costs a lot more but all admission fees are for a very good cause.
The Museum is a thorough history of the the NSW Lancers, the most highly decorated Australian unit. It covers all periods of the Lancers history and includes many interesting exhibits such as weapons, vehicles, uniforms etc.
I would commend this Museum to all who are interested in military history.

Many thanks for your kind review - glad the whole family enjoyed the experience. We'll resist the temptation to serve hot drinks from the Boer War emergency ration tin!

Must see NSW Lancers Barracks and Museum
Feb 2019 • Friends
Situated in well maintained beautiful historical buildings close to Parramatta Railway Station, the NSW Lancers site with its historical buildings, parade ground and memorial museum is a well organised and maintained history of this local regiment from the Boer war to the present day. The volunteer guide was well informed and interesting, giving interesting historical context and facts and allowing time for us to explore the four different rooms of exhibits. Open every Sunday and by appointment - check their website for details. The $8 per person entry fee was very reasonable.

Fantastic insight into Australian military history
Jul 2018 • Couples
Tucked away near Parramatta Station is this little gem of a museum in barracks that are still used by the Australian Army. The main collection is in a historic building relocated to the site many years ago. In four rooms, you can see artefacts relating to:
* the Boer War -- the first overseas military engagement of Australians;
* World War One -- including weapons and items seized on the battlefield;
* World War Two -- featuring the Matilda tanks (of which there is a restored one in the grounds); and
* military operations up to the present.

Ian, our guide, was highly knowledgeable about the collection and offered interesting anecdotes and insights about the significance of items. 90 minutes was not enough to see the entire collection (we concentrated on the Boer War and World War One), so I'd recommend getting in earlier in the day and spending at least two hours there.

This is a must-see for anyone interested in Australian history and a great way to spend a Sunday morning or afternoon.

Amazing Knowledge and Passion
Jul 2017 • Solo
I made it just in time for a guided tour of the barracks, which was a remarkably lucky thing. It was very relaxed and friendly, but the depth of knowledge and passion the volunteer guides have is remarkable. After an introduction to the significance of the various buildings comprising the barracks, I got a glimpse into what it would have been like living there in the early 1900s.

We then went into the static display where I was led through the history of The Lancers, from the Boer War to The First World War, The Second World War and a little into the modern era. I have to repeat that the knowledge of my guide was amazing and had I been alone it would not have compared. Had I read everything available, it would have paled in comparison.

The museum demonstrates the evolution of The Lancers, through uniform, tactics, weaponry and the various action they were involved in. Some of the stories really captured the 'Aussie spirit' and resourcefulness of the soldiers. The collection of documents is fantastic and so important as that is where this insight comes from.

Finally it was back outside to see the military vehicles. Unfortunately a number of volunteers were away so most were under tarpaulins, but by another stroke of luck I got to see 'Ace', the recently restored Matilda tank that had arrived that morning. A huge effort went into the restoration of this unique tank so that it can continue to be appreciated. Thanks guys.

A final big thanks to everyone at the museum who makes it possible. It's so important to appreciate Australian history and preserve what there is. The knowledge on offer was fantastic, big thumbs up, highly recommend visiting Parramatta's best kept secret.

Very many thanks for your kind words Steveo. It's always a great pleasure taking around someone with real interest in what we have to offer. The arrival of ACE after such a long, expensive and complex restoration was the cream on the cake for the volunteers as well - another item of major heritage significance added to our Museum! Many thanks again for taking the time to review us.
