Nice easy short walk. Definitely worth the stop to break a journey. Tunnel was manageable without a torch. Some steps and an abundance of Sandflies

Discarding the bumble bees, this is a very pleasant short walk to stretch the legs when passing through Kawatiri

passed this place by many times and never stopped, now I wish I had done sooner,
It'a almost at the end of the Nelson railway line. The old station is now surrounded by the car park which has some excellent interpretation boards. But the jewel is the walk along the old railway track and through the old tunnel.
You can do the tunnel without a torch - just take your time to let your eyes get accustomed to the lack of light in the middle.
The walk loops back once through to the other side, via some nice riverside beech and podcarp.
All up half hour should see you right. What a great place to take a break on a long journey.

I love this spot, it is a great place to take a break in your drive and has a nice combination of nature and history. Make sure you have your insect repellant out though. A torch is essential if you want to walk through the tunnel.
