Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Having visited iEBC the day before you get up reasonably early between say 4am and 6 am and head up for sunrise. The day I went up it was -15 but no wind. It’s a huge effort I reckon less than 15 percent of the people at Gorek Shep made it to the top whereas 70 percent made EBC. At the top the view is amazing 360 degrees but you can see Everest from only a few hundred meters along the path . What I forgot was I had a long trek afterwards which nearly killed me but well worth it. I hear at sunset it maybe even better .

Mountain trekking in Nepal is an expierence I recommend to anyone who loves mountains. The trek to Kala Pattar starting from village of Jiri is like a pilgrimage and leads to one of the best places to see Mount Everest. The trek leads through many small Nepalese villages, with views of many mountain tops. The walking has a positive effect on the body and the soul, and therefore the trek also is a kind of therapy to bring both the body and mind again in a healthy balance. You can meet a lot of local people (Sherpa's) and tourists from everywhere along the trek, and all the time the trekker can enjoy the most beautifull sceneries with wild rivers and majestic mountains like Ama Dablam. The friendly local people and buddhism give the trek also a spiritual meaning.
After passing the village Namche Bazaar, the trek gets wilder, the altitude higher and lodges more basic. The trekker should have good acclimatization scheme (increase max 700m per day after 3,000m altitude) in order to prevent getting deadly altitude sickness. And then the reward. Walking up Kala Pattar mountain of 6,500m will get you grasping for air but after one hour you will reach the top with breathtaking view of Chomolungma , Sagarmatha or Mount Everest, with clear view on Ice Fall, Hillary Step and the summit. There is one risk of making this trek: you will want to do it again and sense again the feeling of happiness when standing eye to eye with the world's highest peak. Namaste!

On top of the world...for breathtaking views of Mt.Everest, a must. Everest base camp trekking without a climb up to Mt.Kalapatthar is a missed opportunity to see the top of the world. .." you may not be standing on top of the world, but the top of the world would be standing infront of you

We started at 4am in the dark to climb to ‘Kala Pattar’ peak. At (5545 m) the highest point I ever reached. No torch and quite a dangerous narrow path to the point which gave the most amazing view across the Himalaya. The point of leaving so early was to catch the sun as it rose over the mountains which later I regret as it did not help to take good picture for Everest. Everest itself doesn’t look beautiful comparing to the other amazing peaks around it!
. As you climb to 5500m over huge rocks trying not to fall into the gaps and keep your balance on the snow you are also gasping for air because there is less oxygen which is also fuelling the crazy headache you have.
We spent about 20 minutes than we descent down which was much easier than ascending specially with the appearing of the sun which gave a pleasant warming to my frozen fingers!

This is not an easy wander. You will be tired by the time you get to the top but you are more than compensated by the unforgettable view the the mountains forming the top of the world. In retrospect I think an evening/sunset trip up may be more spectacular with the rosy pink hues of sunset on these lofty peak. However of you have no choice then just do it!

Do not stop halfway and say good enough, while very impressive at the halfway point, the assent to the top at 5545m reveals the extraordinary views of the Everest region and give a sample of what it would truly be to stand on the giant Everest as you gaze in awe at its immense size and beauty. Not to mention this is a chance to cross the famous 5500m altitude where 50% of the earths atmosphere is now below you.
This is not a walk in the park but take your time and you'll get there.
Without a doubt the highlight of the entire EBC trek.

We went with three dads and six kids (aged 7 to 16) trekking up Khumbu Valley up to Chukung (about 4,700m) and then a subgroup went on to climb Island Peak (6,200m) without the kids. Landscape is incredible and that time of the year you get up to a crystal blue sky every day. It's also a "different" holidays for kids - a real adventure and getting to know a completely different place.

Little video story is available here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rFpbSJBmxWY&feature=youtu.be

However, very important to read the fine print in the travel insurance. We had one kid that injured himself in an innocuous fall while trekking and we ended up having to get him back to Kathmandu by helicopter and then get a medical plane back home. We had one travel insurance (ACE) that was extremely professional and another one that came up with all kinds of excuses to not provide any support. ("I hope you have some other travel insurance"). All kinds of odd things to look out for - want to have an income tax statement as proof of residence, not always obvious to get proper receipts from heli companies or others for reimbursement.

Early morning start for the sunrise challenges your limits but taking it slow is the key .. Make sure you carry enough water and some light food for energy. The climb gets steeper and steeper as you are about to reach the top. I would recommend pocket warmers for the climb. You get panoramic view of mountains and the closest view of Mt. Everest for trekkers. At the altitude of 5545 mts, it is completely worthed the hard climb. Sunset in a clear day is amazingly beautiful as well.

A must for those who make it to Gorakshep, Kala Patthar offers a gritty and gripping climb with fantastic views. Not much need be said about such places....it's all about the experience. Those with breathing issues may want to skip this climb as oxygen begins to get rare. Take each step with caution as the upper section of the climb is very rocky and one misstep over loose rock will not end very well.
