Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Great activity. The boat ride out to the glow worm caves was a nice cruise.
Our host to take us through the caves was exceptional. She was very knowledgeable, and it was very obvious she loved what she does.

Booked onto the glow worm tour on an evening in February 2024. The boat ride across the lake to the caves was good and we saw some fantastic stars on the way home! The glow worms themselves were also good and it was very interesting to see them. What I didn’t like about this experience is that I felt it was overpriced - you don’t spend a great deal of time in the cave and it’s very rushed between groups (you go round in 12’s). There was a brief talk / presentation beforehand which was good to listen to for an overview. They have English speaking in one room and Mandarin in another. When we finished the cave tour (which felt very rushed) we arrived back at the centre. We were asked to go into the side room as a presentation had begun for the next group. Once we got into this room we were rather abruptly and rudely sent back outside by the lady in there. There were only 3-5 people in the room, and we could have easily continued to wait in there quietly while they did the talk. In this room were boards with info about the glow worms and history of the place (I assume) but we didn’t get chance to read any of this. Free tea & coffee available in the main room. I’m glad that I saw the glow worms but I wasn’t particularly enthused by the overall experience.

Our day visiting Doubtful Sound was a highlight of what was already a fantastic tour of the west coast of the south island.
Getting out to the sound, on a boat, then a bus, then a good three hours on a boat on the sound, was a wonderful experience. Our bus driver was knowledgable and shared pertinent, interesting facts about the extraordinary landscape we travelled through. This is certainly not a cheap tour, but by far worth every cent and we would do this tour again over just the two hours on Milford Sound.

Seeing the glowworms has been on my bucketlist for nearly 25 years. This tour did not disappoint. The boat ride was relaxing and scenic with a little commentary along the way. We had a very nice tour guy leading us through the caves. After we exited the cave we had a couple of stops with information boards setup on local wildlife. The final stop was in a little building where they offered tea and coffee and had a presentation on the glowworms. Everything was well organized, breaking up the guests into small groups. The only thing that was a bit surprising was that photos made it appear that the "fishing lines" lit up. Nothing was mentioned during the presentation, but I realized the professional photos have long exposures, which allow the worms glow to bounce off the lines. What you see in the caves are little dots of light (still very cool). I have traveled enough to know professional photos almost always look better than what we actually see, but it would have been nice if the guides mentioned that.

Go here instead of Milford Sound if you are in High Season!! We were one of the only boats on the water and the views were just amazing! I must have taken 100 pictures just of the waterfalls. The best part of the trip was at the end when the captain asked everyone to come out on the deck put there cameras away and stay completely quiet and listen. It was magical!
The day we went was very rainy which was a bummer but it meant that the waterfalls were absolutely gushing and in the end, the sun came out so don't hesitate if it happens to call for rain the day you want to go. Also, you can get drinks and food on the boat. Lots of people brought their own food which was also fine. It was chilly so we had tea and hot chocolate. There were lots of mugs and hot water available if you wanted to bring your own. I wish we had a warmer jacket and gloves. We LOVED this tour and then we drove to Milford Sound and did a few hikes and watched about 50 boats out on the water.

DS is of course fantastic. The tour with Real NZ wasn’t bad but it felt far too many people squeezed onto the boat - there were only seats for about 50% if people so lots had to stand around and there were races to get seats at each change of vehicle and to viewpoints for photos. Would have been much more pleasant if they hadn’t overfilled it so much.

The weather was perfect and showed off the stunning scenery at its very best. The icing on the cake was the incredibly welcoming staff who greeted us warmly onto both boats. They were friendly, knowledgeable and informative. Our captain on Doubtful Sound explained the changing conditions and ensured that we were prepared for changes in wind and waves, and our nature guide clearly enjoyed telling us about all of the features of the sound. Finally, the bus drivers were great too, loved the Dad jokes!! All in all a memorable day with a great bunch of genuine people, great customer service.

The trip was sold out with a couple of bus tours showing up. It was raining extremely hard and had been for a couple of days. So our expectations were not high. But I guess the extremely heavy rain brought out thousands of waterfalls we would not have seen otherwise. And the others on the boat were polite. The boat was large enough that it didn’t feel too tight and if you were willing to get soaked on the deck, you could have the most incredible fiord experience. They even drove the boat under a waterfall and I could stand under it. My suggestion is wait on the rain and embrace it. We are camping our way across New Zealand and this is the only tour we’ve paid for and we are glad we did.

A well organised trip (we started and finished at Manapouri) with informative commentary throughout.
A not-to-be missed trip when visiting this part of NZ.
It rained all day - but in compensation, the waterfalls were spectacular. Visibility was rather limited at times (the guide confirmed that although heavier rain had been seen, this was the worst he had seen in terms of visibility) - but that the way it is, so no fault of the operator!
Booked via Tripadvisor - beware that the price is in US dollars, not NZ dollars, so cost us a bit more than expected.

We stayed in Te Anau because we were going to take a cruise at Milford Sound. The town is about one hour and 50 minutes to Milford Sound, but the route is quite scenic. It is a nice town with many restaurant choices, super markets and gas stations. One strange thing is that drivers did not give pedestrians right of way at the supposed crosswalks which was not clearly marked with paint but was paved with bricks. At two occasions, cars almost ran us over. We did not experience this at all in other towns and cities. Watch for your safety when you cross streets. Happy travels.
