Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

I was looking for things to do around our accommodation in Ferma when I came across the TA listing for "Minoan Water Tanks"... after passing it almost every day during our stay, we finally decided to check out this oddity to see if there was any more information, or even any proof that it is indeed a Minoan artifact. My wife is very much into Minoan archaeology and I thought she might be able to shed some light on it.

We couldn't. It's just there. Carved precisely into the rock for an unknown reason, at an unknown time, by unknown people. I'd love a bit more information about why this was called Minoan. It could be, but why would they carve out this big square basin into the rocks. There are no other Minoan sites near by as far as we could tell.

It seems to have been deliberately created with access to the sea water, but over time part of it has eroded and now there is quite a large hole where the sea comes in and out. It could be for storing fish, it could be for bathing (there are nice steps carved into the rock to help access).. who knows? Might as well have been put there by aliens.

Can anyone shed light on this supposedly Minoan artifact?

Be warned it's just a hole in the ground near a bar, but it was fun to find and it was a nice chance to think about what's changed in there world

Minoan Water Tanks are placed near hotel You need to drive on east11 km from Ierapetra to the hotel Kakkos Bay.
Go in front of the hotel and turn right down to the parking near hotel.
From the parking you will find rocky hill. you need climb there and just after you will find the tank.
Take it ease because there isn't build any way or path. I went there with kids however everybody need to take care about them - it could be dangerous for kids without adult assistant.

This is well worth a small detour, possibly on your way to see the Milonas Waterfall which is nearby. But is it a Minoan Water Tank? No, it's a Roman fish trap. Plenty of pictures and a nature guide at: http://cretenature.blogspot.co.uk/2014/04/in-search-of-roman-repast.html

The right location are rocks nearly Kakkos bay hotel. You can see big square from satellite view of Google Maps. 500m west there are also two fish tanks little bit smaller.

Incredible to see how this ancient culture managed to carve massive water tanks out of solid rock at the edge of the sea with nothing more than basic bronze tools.

The site isn't well mapped and will require a little bit of gentle climbing to get to, but well worth seeing.

All over Crete there are historical buildings of the old Minoans. It's worth a look, it's just a short walk from the hotel.

It's such a shame that they have not been preserved. In fact you could miss them if you had not got local information of the area. Its is certainly not marked up from the road side.

As i mentioned in the title, dont go out of your way unless its 10 minutes or so, but if you drive by definitely stop. Bigger than i expected and it was cool to see the stairs. Nice place to stretch legs and take a few photos, there was a beach not far but we didnt check it out.
