    Visit to Riverstone Castle
4 of us went to visit Riverstone Castle today. To get a tour through the castle you pay $30. The guide was exceptional and knew a lot about the history of the castle. You could not take photos inside because the owners live in it. The guide did take some photos of us inside. The gardens were excellent. The area also has a cafe and several shops that sell various Knick knacks. There is also a big kids play area. You could easily spend half a day walking around. This is a place you have to visit if you are in the Oamaru area.

    Simply amazing, must visit highlight
We loved this. So pleased we discovered this place by chance and so grateful that we got to do a tour. Pleasant gift stores. Beautiful gardens and moat. Highly recommend. Everywhere in the castle is amazing filled with so much impressive artwork and decor. The guide was also pleasant as well giving us a commentary at the beginning, allowing us to explore in peace and then showing us the dungeon and the secret passageway.

A surprise stop during our travels
This ended up being a last minute addition to our trip. I'd not even heard of it until the man checking us into our hotel the night before mentioned it. It was a great place to visit, but a little odd in ways. The first thing to note is that it's actually an active residence. So when you arrive there are signs telling you were to go, up to a point. We wandered around the outside of the castle a bit until I re-read the instructions on the web site and somewhat guessed at where the front door is. So when they say to arrive 15 minutes before a tour time, they mean it. Someone will pop out of the front door to tell you you're in the right place and she's wrapping up the prior tour. Also note the fact that you have to remove your shoes for the tour. You can bring slippers if you like, but otherwise you'll walk around in your socks or bare feet. Inside, however, they have pictures of the castle during it's various stages of construction and the guide is available to tell you just about anything about the owners, the castle, or the process of building it. This ended up being a surprise stop on our trip through New Zealand. It was really a lot of fun to see.

    Castle of a queen
What an amazing experience. To be allowed into someone’s home which is a dreamed of Castle. It’s beginnings , the architecture the work involved during its evolution Dots dream. The way that it is all pristine and beautifully decorated with pieces from countries through out the world . We had a guide who was very knowledgeable but Dot herself answered .lots of question. Fantastic gardens, shops and a great cafe. Best savoury scones I have had

    Absolutely MUST SEE
Definitely WOW! I must admit I wasn’t “busting” to visit but ‘went along’ and boy am I glad I did. The tour guide Raewyn is fabulous. Being left alone to explore felt like we were trusted in the private mansion (what a lovely touch and certainty not betrayed!) was a privilege. Truly an amazing castle fantastically staged and decorated. But the ABSOLUTE highlight was the opportunity to meet the lady of the house. Utterly inspirational. Heartfelt thank you Dot (and of course Neil)

The ladies went through the place - us guys went for coffee
While we didn't go through the castle my wife and her sister did. They were amazed about the place - they knew it as "Dot's Castle". Their guide was evidently excellent and took a few photos for them - visitors aren't allowed to take photos as it is a private home. They couldn't believe the extravagance of it all even though it has been extremely well made and presented. They did say that the place was full of wonderful artworks, and ornaments and quality furniture and fittings. Evidently it was a dream of Dot and she had a husband who was happy to go with it for her. Our ladies were impressed and suggested that it was very much worth a visit

A must!!
We saw the castle the day of King Charles coronation.
And it was well decorated to to celebrate this occasion on two dining areas, one formal and informal.
There was photo opportunities of tiaras in two areas.
It is a definite must see no matter what day of the year is.
Dot has do an amazing job combining many aspects seen on stately homes and castles worldwide.

This was one of the things to do on our list of tourist attractions in and around Oamaru. Thank goodness it was open. Absolutely stunning with so many things to see and take in. A real look into the life of Dot and Neil. We were lucky enough to meet Dot who is an absolute gem, as is Raweyn who runs the tours and attends to all of the details, an asset with a great sense of humor. Riverstone Castle really didn't disappoint. A must thing to do.

An amazing look into Dot and Neil's Riverstone Castle. So much stuff to take in with an amazing attention to detail. Limited viewing opportunities, so if in the area I can highly recommend a visit. $30 per person and you spend about an hour inside. You also get to experience a very unique departure 👍😀
