Off the beaten track and only open intermittently, but very definitely worth the effort to see this wonder of Victorian engineering. They don't make stuff like this anymore!

Easter Monday was very wet and very cold, so we could appreciate that the craft fair was cancelled and that the ground would be muddy. We decided it was still worth a trip out to Papplewick. I've seen the amazing Victorian engineering before but it...More

Having wanted to visit for a long time, finally made it on Easter Monday and certainly not disappointed. On arrival, volunteers told us craft fair closed due to the bad weather which although disappointing did not spoil the day. The beam engines are simply spectacular,...More

We went yesterday & what a pleasure it was to see the steam beam engines in operation. The workshops are interesting as well with even a blacksmith making items you can buy. There is a small steam engine which you can ride on, great for...More

I have been here several times & always enjoyed it. The enthusiasm of the volunteers & brilliant running engines & machinery are always impressive. On bank holiday weekends there are often other things going on too, model boats & steampunk amongst them. Something for everyone...More

Popped in to see the Pumping Station in action, along with a visit to the craft fair. Both were excellent. The station displays a true experience of industry in Victorian times, clearly explained by welcoming staff. Also available are a children's playing area and mini...More

A friend and I visited during the 1940s Weekend in October. Many people were attired in military uniform - we spotted British, German, American, Italian, Russian... - which made for a great atmosphere. There were so many highlights: the rather scary German Checkpoint where -...More

We visited Papplewick Pumping station today as we had heard that there was a 1940s weekend. Celebrating the era with music, classic cars, WW2 battle re-enactment, information and generally lovely lovely people. You could go around the pumping station and learn how life used to...More

The Saturday that we visited the pumping station was in steam which really brought an architectural and engineering gem to life. And our trip was made even more enjoyable because it was the 1940s Week-end. The amount of detail that people put into their costumes...More
