The smallest cathedral in the UK
Oct 2021
But it is one of the most beautiful. The first church on the site was started by Paulinus in 627 ad. There are parts of the old Saxon church found in the Minster. The Chapter House has many stone carvings of foliage, and also has a number of carvings of green men found throughout. It is the tallest Chapter House we have seen. Next to the Minster is the ancient ruins of the Archbishops Palace.

An unexpected find! Well worth a visit.

An impromptu discovery and a joy to visit. An interesting visit too, The Minster is 'a large or important church, typically one of cathedral status in the north of England that was built as part of a monastery'. My interest was the collection of War Memorials located within. Its in a lovely setting for a picnic, though there is a nice cafe on the site too.

Lovely building and surrounds. Really beautiful stained glass windows. I should have prepared with myself with the history before going to fully appreciate the history.

Called here on the way home from Lincoln. An amazing piece of history set in a small town. A fascinating mixture of Roman, Norman and medieval architecture and some beautiful modern stained glass and statues. Volunteer guides were so helpful in pointing out features we would otherwise have missed !

So beautiful
Sep 2021
Absolutely stunning stained glass and a fascinating history. The guides were ready with detailed information and there was so much here that I definitely want to visit again as there wasn't time to take it all in.
Southwell is the home of the Bramley Apple and there is a dedicated Bramley window. The 20th century Angel window is spectacular as are the Victorian windows.
There is restoration work going on in the Chapter House at this precise time which will make it more accessible which is great.
There is a lift in the Bishop's Palace as well but I couldn't manage to operate it or find assistance so had to leave it to the more able members of the party to report back. Absolutely stunning though and worth the visit.

Was given an easy to follow walking guide and brief talk. This enormous church was unexpected in the bijou village setting.

I love the Minster, always fascinating and this time included a beautiful exhibition. Lots of work has been done and everything was looking beautiful. Friendly staff. Cafe next door with outside seating. Everything, clean and safe. Well worth going.
