Visited Boundary Island early March. Arriving at the island, you are 'greeted' with people trying to sell you activities.
Decided to join the 'submarine' activity. Never been in a submarine.
We were expected 30 min under water ( as told when asking for info), but it was 30 min total time, including boarding a boot, navigating to the place the submarine was waiting, unboarding the boot and entering the submarine, around 10 min under water, then back.
The submarine went around 15 m deep in a water loaded with sand and dirt. Far from the clear water seeing on promotion pictures. We saw a few fishes because they nearly hit the window, they were attracted by someone feeding them. Overall, a big waste of 720 for two persons.
After that 'amazing' experience, we gave up trying other activities and only walked around the island. That part was good, as you have very nice views in places with a very small number of tourists. Coffee was worth to try ( try to avoid milk and/or sugar to really enjoy the taste)
So, if you go there, keep your money and walk up the mountain..

As others have noted you get swamped by sales staff as to disembark, who want to sell the big packages ... unsure if you could get around all the activities included in each package. It would be a very long day. Wanted to do a couple of underwater activities but the were "unavailable". Settled on the submarine experience. What a mistake. Murky water with a paucity of fish. The submarine bumbled around crashing into and crushing coral. An ecological disaster. If they took more care of the marine environment there would be more fish and a better experience for tourists.

Not a great experience—an overcrowded tourist trap. Beach area was tiny and stuffed with people. Views from the top of the island were pretty, but that was about it. Avoid.

This is a pretty island that is fine for a two hour visit when you are en route elsewhere. Be warned that this is a day-tripper haven. The port around the ferry dock is very busy and you'll probably enjoy the island most if you get out of there as swiftly as possible. We were taken to a sad little dolphin show, but from there we boarded the zoo train and went towards the peak. Walke edthe last bit of the way to the summit, which was much lesss crodwed and afforded lovely views of the mainland. There was also a little shrine (built in 2016) which was nice to explore. It made for a nice stop-over enroute fromthe north to the southern end of Hainan. But I would NOt recommend staying much longer than a couple hours.

The moment you get off the Ferry, you are inundated with hawkers representing various water sport companies or tour companies.

All the stores and restaurants are highly overpriced!
Mainly, the value is very poor.
For example, a submarine ride is about 400 rmb ($60), which normally is cheap. But, it’s only a 10 minute viewing time!!

The best thing to do is just hike up the mountain to the small temple. There you can see good views 360 degrees around.

If you can secure a bicycle, then it’d probably be nice to explore that way.

4 of us were attracted by the beautiful brochure of the Boundary Island and booked the Sea View Villa from the Boundary Island Fishing Club for a 2 night 3 day vacation. We flew from Guangzhou to the city of Sanya, Hainan Island.
The hotel provide free shuttle but not from the airport. So we have to taxi to the hotel office in Sanya and took the shuttle which only operated twice daily at 3 and 3:30 pm. The shuttle took about a little over an hour to reach the pier where we then took a 10 min boat ride to the island. Once on the island, we located the Fishing Club office and registered for 2 sea view villa which located high up on the side of the hill. There are no free schedule transportation on the Island. Ride the golf cart shuttle up and down the hill from the villa to the beach or restaurant area cost 5 RMB ( about US $ 0.75) each way each person and it can add up pretty fast unless you don't mind spending about 20 min climbing those 45 degree winding slopes.
As for the villa, it should be beautiful in it's prime days but now it aged and badly needs some up keeping like a fresh coat of stain or paint. The villa balcony provides a unobstructed parametric view of the island and the ocean and it is gorgeous, especially during sunset. If you are a hermit and want to stay in your villa all the time, then this should be your cup of tea. For the rest of us who want to relax on the beach or have a quite scroll through the commercial part of the island, then you will disappointed.
The problem is there are not visitor control on the island. So from around 9 am to 7 pm, boatload and boatload of tourist invade the island for their one day tour. The whole island is full of people and you might feel you are in the downtown of Honolulu during tourist season.
Another problem is the designated swimming area is very small, probably around 200 ft beach front with life guards. The rest of the island is prohibit to swim at all not even at your own risk because there is no life guards.
Since there is no kitchen in the villa so we become the captive customers for the few restaurants on the island. The food is bad and expensive, a far cry from the famous Chinese Cuisine we all use to. The included breakfast ( and the only breakfast available on the whole island ) is located in a restaurant on the other side of the island so either you walk 30 min or another 10 RMB both ways just to have breakfast.
During the whole trip on the island, we tried hard to find any marine animal in the water or on the beach and we found very few tiny fishes Our reservation also include a free glass bottom boat ride in the evening. We thought with the light from boat at least we can see some fishes. The boat ride took about 30 min and we couldn't even see any marine animal at all.
The water is very clear and we can see down to 20 ft of water. All we saw are dead coral and abandoned building material laying along the ocean floor. What a shame. The only live marine animal were those keep captive in the sea park. I check the brochure and the last review on the island was made a few yrs back and a lot of environmental deterioration has been going on since.
On the whole, we were disappointed that such a beautiful island resource is not managed properly in terms of lodging upkeep, food service, transportation, tourist control, and environment protection. I recommend you better spend your vacation and dollar elsewhere . I give it 3 stars just for the island's beautiful scenery.

The boundary island happened purely by accident. We were one of the last minute planners this year for our chinese new year holidays. I bumped into this option on the internet and while trying to locate the place, considered going for it purely because it was located further out from Sanya & its normally touristy spots frequented by other tourists. To our surprise, this island is a 20-25 min boat ride from the mainland onto this utterly well developed island maintained by the 'boundary island' group.

There are several water sports activities, beautifully spaced out as well as equipped rooms to cater to couples, families, larger travelling groups etc. The staff on the island are well spread out and support the needs of the scores of visitors (most of who are day tourists who come in and go out) with a sporting smile. There are the usual 'viewing points' from various spots within the island (which is mountainous) that are a visual treat onto themselves. There are also the specific swimming areas/beach spots that allow one to soak in the white sand and the breezy spirit in the air.
There are several seafood restaurant options as well as a western restaurant. The western restaurant was a huge disappointment in an otherwise flawless experience. There was hardly anything on the menu and for us vegetarians, this place that was otherwise providing some hope turned to be a rather sour experience.
Nobody understands or speaks English. We happened to be the ONLY non-chinese tourists those 2 days we were on the island. The staff took great care of our needs (as long as we managed to communicate the same well enough). I highly recommend this place, as a definite alternative in case you are visiting sanya for 4-5 days. It is about 1.5 hours away from Sanya city side and one needs to hook up with either the boundary island management for a bus transportation from the city to the ferry point or hire a cab.
Within the island, there are electric cars that could help ferry people/luggage around to the various points of interest. Very flexible for us as we were travelling with parents as well as our twin infants. The crowds can be unnerving for some but being Indians, we are used to crowds and therefore were quite at 'home'.
Regarding the attractions -- some of them offer a discount for residents, so therefore remember to flash your room keys incase you would like to draw their attention towards this fact and it might help! Having a chinese speaking companion is a huge plus, and my wife who is a level3 chinese 'scholar' (for me:)) was leading all discussions. Despite this, things can be a challenge as the chinese spoken in Hainan Islands is very different from what we are used to up north in Beijing.
Complexities apart, this place is very blissful, relatively virgin i believe and deserves attention while things are still maintained as well as they are now :)
