Waiotahe Beach is an absolutely beautiful gateway to the East Cape. The fishing is excellent, particularly over the summer months, good for surf casting or long liners.
For picknickers or day trippers thoroughly recommend setting up for the day under the pohutukawas about half way along the beach. Apart from around the river mouth at the Northern end of the beach most areas are save to swim, best nearing high tide.
White Island sits directly out from Waiotahe ( approx 15-20kms offshore), and can be seen quite easily on most days, usually puffing a small plume of white smoke., pretty spectacular if you haven’t seen her before!
We like to fish the Northern end on an I ncoming tide, and best results for snapper are usually on change of light or an evening fish.
The Opotiki Surf Life Saving facility and toilets are situated at the southern end of the beach, the club only manned on more popular days (holidays and weekends usually).

We visited late January - a lovely beach but we had windy weather which was disappointing but not uncommon for a NZ summer! I would have liked to see lifeguards out and to be able to safely swim between the flags, as a couple of days the sea was quite rough, but no lifeguards even though it was still summer school holidays - perhaps the 2m Great White that cruised in front of us was the lifeguard? 😜🤔

Always a breathtaking experience driving along the main road to Opotiki from Whakatane when you come round the corner and see this lovely beach. The road follows it for several kms and at the far end there is a coffee cart by the beach.

A nice enough beach that stretches for miles. Nice turquoise sea when the sun is out. However, the dead wood spoils it for me amongst the lava dust. There are much nicer, sandier beaches about - maybe I’ve been spoiled.

Took the teenage daughters here and they had a wonderful time. Also, the dog had a ball running up and down the beach chasing his ball.
