Beautiful native bush, river views, nice places to stop along the way, and a few museum type stops, etc.

This piece of road has always been one of our favourites but recently after a long time we were lucky enough to be able to travel through here from Gisborne to Opotiki, once again. A gently windy road, following a beautiful river with every b end seeminly like a painting scene ahead of you. So very , very pretty that it doesn't seem to take long at all. No cafe's etc going through but there are cafes before and after it . Photographers will want their cameras handy and be prepared for lots of stops as you view the stunning scenes, of river, bush, waterfalls and cliffs.

We came in to do the Tauranga Bridge Loop track. The drive in is nice. The track goes over the historic bridge and then branches. If you want to do the loop do the boring left side of the river first until you get up to the top of the track. The right side of river track is much more scenic and interesting. There are two river crossings where getting your feet wet is unavoidable. The rest of the track is muddy in places. At the top stream crossing just up river there is a deep pool excellent for swimming. A word of caution take the car park signs seriously as cars are burgled here daily. We left nothing to see or of value in our car but it was still broken into. There are no cameras and local authorities have no interest in sorting this out.

We drove through the gorge both ways over a long weekend. The scenery is breathtaking in parts and is definitely different from one side of the road to the other. The only problem is when you get the odd driver with road rage right up your backside! Concentration must be 100% despite my navigator constantly saying “look at that”

My daughter and I were staying in Opotiki on a mini break. We ventured through the gorge to the Tauranga Bridge. From the carpark the track goes downhill and is quite rugged at times. You need to keep your eyes on your feet! It is quite a long way, all downhill to the bridge. It was a very hot day and even when we got to the bridge it was still a long way down to the river. The view is lovely but the river is quite low. You can take the right fork on the trail and you will get down to the river for a dip. Which is what my daughter did. However I have trouble walking up hills so I stopped at the bridge. I was beginning to think it might be impossible for me to get up the track again, when two rangers backed down the track In a 4 wheel drive truck. They checked the rat trap near the bridge then headed back to their vehicle. I was very relieved that I was able to get a lift up to the carpark. I couldn’t believe how steep it was. You don’t notice on the way down. If they hadn’t come along I might have had to be rescued.

It takes about two hours to get from Opotiki to Gisborne. This road has been under reconstruction for as long as I can remember (some 60 odd years) so it's not easy and demands driver attention and it's inadvisable to drive fast. The scenery is wonderful and there are some good spots to stop along the way. Suggest the walk to Tauranga Bridge.

We had intended driving Gisborne to Opotiki round the cape however the road was closed due to a road accident. Our disappointment was quickly alleviated by the stunning native bush setting through the gorge and the epic roads. That downhill trek was amazing and the historical sites very poignant and picturesque. Even a little bit of rain didn't spoil it (the short walk to the Tauranga bridge may get quite slippery if it was raining harder) . Deepest condolences to the whanau of the person who passed away in the accident.

After many years of travelling through the beautiful Waioeka Gorge, I finally stopped to share seeing the Tauranga Bridge with my grandson. Very impressive bridge and to read the history behind it. If he had been older we would have done the walk. The Waioeka Gorge is just amazing.
