We did the 18km return bike trip to Waiaua along the ocean (kids 10 & 12 and all on normal bikes, not ebikes). What a truly beautiful track, such a stunning part of the country and beach & surf the whole way along. Good track, nice board paths, up and down but nothing too strenuous. Lots of places to stop. Only grumble would be those blasted bikestops you have to go through as have to keep getting off your bike, pity there isn’t another way to keep the horses/motorbikes out. Would definitely do this trail again, and easy drive from Ohope where we were staying. Loved the bridge too. Would thoroughly recommend.

From reviews read on Trip Advisor, we expected the trail to be an easy trail along the ocean. It proved to be a bit of a challenge. First of all the surface is loose gravel and parts of it were coated in sand from the wind.Secondly it is undulating with lots of twists and turns. We had street small fold-up electric bikes designed for street riding so needless to say we experienced a few uncertain times when the tires skidded in the loose gravel and sand. It is an I deal trail for mountain bikes. The views of the ocean were lovely and the trail is well marked.

Thank you for the review Graham. As you'll appreciate, it's extremely dry here at present with virtually no rain in 5 weeks. This is naturally impacting on the trail surface in exposed spots. But yes, the trail is undulating with about 100m of total elevation gain each way; it's grade 2 easy as opposed to grade 1 easy. Best wishes, Jim

Wonderful views on the dunes trail right along the beach, some gravel and some boardwalk (wide enough for people and dogs walking and a bike). For the enthusiast you can do the inland part which winds up into the mountains and back down through the gorge. We just did the dunes part and it was easy to ride and relaxing.

Really enjoyed our dune trail ride, not too strenuous for a couple of 60 yr olds. The bikes were great, really comfortable. We really appreciated being able to park our camper on the lawn and stop the night at the trail HQ. Staff were super friendly and helpful. Thanks so much, would love to come back and do more when time permits.10/10

Decided to drive the Motu Road from the Opotiki end to the Motu Village and then continue on to Matawai on Easter Saturday because we hadn't been on in it years and years. The scenery through the native bush is spectacular but can be as scary as hell when you look down the sheer drops and can't even see the bottom! The road (can you call it that?) is a narrow dirt track for much of the way with very large potholes pitting it here and there and everywhere! In several places erosion has caused the cliff edge of the road to fall away which is rally sobering because you come upon these with no warning and there are no barriers or cones to mark the extent of them. It pays to go slowly (20-30km per hour) for much of it and keep as far left as possible because you frequently come upon cyclists travelling the Motu trail ride and some locals and tourists travelling in the opposite direction. One guy in a white 4WD with bull bars was going fast and definitely wasn't in any mood to give way to anyone!! We also had to back up some distance to let a large campervan through (crazy guy). Our car sits up off the ground a bit so it was okay but you really would be better in a ute or 4WD, especially if it's been raining because there's a couple of fords that would be really hairy to cross with water raging over them. All in all it took longer than we thought but it was fun and we felt like we'd really achieved something when we finally reached Motu Village and drove the extra 5km to visit the beautiful falls there. The Motu Road, which is the old coach road, really gives you an insight to what it must have been like for the early settlers going over it in horse and wagon. After that we continued on to Matawai where, boo hoo, the pub is closed so our idea of pub lunch was out but we had a yummy lunch at the Hardride Cafe where the staff are REALLY friendly and the food is tasty.

Glad you enjoyed the adventure! A 4wd and good clearance is definitely recommended for Motu Road. People do go up in campers, but yeh, that could be dodgy if for instance they need to reverse. Easter is by far the busiest time of the year on the Motu Road as it is the hunting Roar (stags calling); at all times, as you say, there are likely to be cyclists. Often at other times of year you see just a couple of cars. The Motu Road was the main road across Eastland 1915-1929, there are many news reports from the 1920s of cars down banks!

John went the extra mile for us. One of us a wheelchair user so we needed some extra planning, he was great to help us navigate what we needed. Thanks John!

We did the pakihi track and it was great, there were a few trees we had to lift over. I consider myself a fairly competent biker but there were definitely some vertical drops to the side. Quite glad I didn’t have my kids with me. Awesome track but take care in places

Thank you for the review Philippah, glad you enjoyed the track. The trees were from the major storm the previous two days. The Pakihi Track is rated advanced/grade 4, so yes, we definitely wouldn't recommend kids ride it unless they are very experienced. It's a brilliant young-family walk though, great swimming holes; and the Dunes Trail is a ride for everyone. Jim

Easy ride. Bring a picnic as there are wooden decks in the dunes to chill out and enjoy the ocean and beach view.

If you are working in Opotiki or around to pick kiwi or any other job that's the place to be !
You can sleep in your Van and use the facilities (huge kitchen, commun room with wifi, bathroom...) for a cheap price or rent a room for a bit more of money. There is a lot of space and a good atmosphere, you're filling at home ! You can play tennis table, watch your movies on the Tv and you're not far of the sea.

I definitely recommend it !
