Probably too late, but on Hengisbury you can take the 'road train’ which takes you from close to the ferry dock up to the cafe, half way back to ‘Southbourne’ hence half the walk:

Dogs are welcome around the gardens, not sure whether they're meant to be kept on leads or not but they seemed to be running free on the beach, hope that helps.
