The castle is attractive, and the history is interesting. The formal garden is very small, but the grounds are nice and you can walk down the steps to the beach.

Get the bus from Highcliffe Castle to Mudeford. Walk to Mudeford Quay and take the ferry to Hengisbury Head. It’s quite a long walk from there back to Southbourne where you can catch the bus back to Bournemouth

Dogs are welcome around the gardens, not sure whether they're meant to be kept on leads or not but they seemed to be running free on the beach, hope that helps.
