You are hot on the trail of the best-kept secret!Cheese-making tools at hand, the aroma of the herbal brine in your nostrils, while you watch the cheesebeing made: welcome to Appenzell’s Cheese Paradise.Insights into the Cheese-maker’s ArtYou can follow the manufacture of Appenzeller cheese from the visitors’ gallery, looking straight down into the 6,500-litre cheese vat where the milk is prepared and the cheese harp is drawn through the thickened jelly. The sight of 13,500 cheese wheels six metres below, where a robot takes care of them, is most impressive. The film in several languages (German, English, French, Italian, Spanish, Swedish, Russian, Finnish) in the Dairy Cinema provides additional information. On request, trained hostesses will act as your guide and explain everything.

This is a touristy restaurant in the picturesque canton of Appenzell. You can get there honest Swiss country fare (cheese, sausages, etc). We had an (overpriced) Appenzeller cheese sampler as appetizer and salad and cheese tart for main course. The cheese tart was delicious but...More

We didn't know what to expect - a garden shed or, maybe, something larger ? But this is a "proper" factory and it has dedicated visitor facilities. Well worth the visit

My only suggestion is when you go come as a group. The reason for this it may be easier to get in. For individual tickets they are harder to buy because they tend to sell out. I would see if you can make a reservation....More

We rode the bus out to tour the dairy but did not realize we needed a reservation to take the guided tour . Unfortunately, there wasn't any space available for walk up customers on the day we were there. The dairy does have an I-pad...More

We had an pre-booked organised trip here. The tour started with a short video explaining the process and this was followed by looking down into where the cheese is actually being made. Obviously the whole process takes months so we could not see the finished...More

My wife loves cheese and in particular Appenzeller. So we had to go to the Schaukaeserei. The entry is free (great) but you can also rent an iPad so you have more information when going around. Well, it was very interesting but seeing that we...More

This is a great little stop between Appenzell and Galen. Plenty of parking. Here you can see some of the cheese making process, taste various cheeses and there is a restaurant (did not eat there). Not an all day event, but worth the stop.

Had high hopes of seeing the full process of making cheeses and sampling some along the way. Alas, this was not to be. All u had were window panels to look through to see 1) the mixing stirring process and 2) some machinery going up...More

This is a very nice look at how the Swiss make cheese and, more particularly, why Appenzeller cheese is so unique. It shows you how the cheese is collected and processed. How they age the cheese and the process which makes the flavor of their...More

If you drive to Appenzell, you can catch the Appenzeller Bahn (local train) to Wasseraun, then the cable car to Ebenalp. Very easy to do. Once you exit the cable car, walk toward the left toward Wildkirchli to reach Gasthaus... More
