A great tour with very good explanations about the process of cheese making including videos. Very nice overview of the history of the region and the place in particular. Definitely worth the detour from St Gallen.
This place shows history and present of the Appenzeller cheese on a interactive way. The exhibition is interesting, but it would be great to receive a bit more sample cheese at the entrance. Shop has also wide variety of local products.
Fantastic tour of cheese factory and history of company from its founding. Wonderful tasting of cheeses and education regarding processes, flavors, aging and so forth. A must see if you love cheese in its myriad styles and flavors
This is a touristy restaurant in the picturesque canton of Appenzell. You can get there honest Swiss country fare (cheese, sausages, etc). We had an (overpriced) Appenzeller cheese sampler as appetizer and salad and cheese tart for main course. The cheese tart was delicious but...More
My only suggestion is when you go come as a group. The reason for this it may be easier to get in. For individual tickets they are harder to buy because they tend to sell out. I would see if you can make a reservation....More
We rode the bus out to tour the dairy but did not realize we needed a reservation to take the guided tour . Unfortunately, there wasn't any space available for walk up customers on the day we were there. The dairy does have an I-pad...More
We had an pre-booked organised trip here. The tour started with a short video explaining the process and this was followed by looking down into where the cheese is actually being made. Obviously the whole process takes months so we could not see the finished...More
My wife loves cheese and in particular Appenzeller. So we had to go to the Schaukaeserei. The entry is free (great) but you can also rent an iPad so you have more information when going around. Well, it was very interesting but seeing that we...More
This is a great little stop between Appenzell and Galen. Plenty of parking.
Here you can see some of the cheese making process, taste various cheeses and there is a restaurant (did not eat there). Not an all day event, but worth the stop.

If you drive to Appenzell, you can catch the Appenzeller Bahn (local train) to Wasseraun, then the cable car to Ebenalp. Very easy to do. Once you exit the cable car, walk toward the left toward Wildkirchli to reach Gasthaus Ascher. It's a bit of a downhill walk (not steep, just lots of gravel). When you are done, climb back up and take cable car down to Wasseraun, retracing your path. No tour necessary.
The cheese factory at Stein is a self guided display, so no tour us needed there either. Very easy to do on your own.
