After a couple hours of hiking through the thick Genserin Shiratani rainforest, it is both magical and surreal to finally emerge from all the foliage to behold such a view. WOW. It was incredibly windy which made it even more majestic. We were there on...More

We took the local bus to the entrance of Shiratani Unsuikyo. After an already exciting almost 2 hours hike we reached the Taikoiwa rock. What an amazing spot and what a great view. Plan enough time for your visit so that you are able to...More

The view is impressive and the walk up and down covers the most natural and beautiful terrain. Be sure to take the slightly longer path of the loop, either up or down.

This is the final destination of the long hiking route of the Shiratani Unsuikyo. And man is it worth it. It was a clear sunny day, which is often elusive on the famously rainy Yakushima, and I couldn't help but give an earnest expression of...More

We climbed up to Taikoiwa early morning and luckily the weather was very nice and we had a great view. As there was nobody else, we had a second breakfast to re-energise ourselves for a big walk (we were walking to Jomonsugi from Shiratani Unsuikyo)....More

Great view and easy hike since it was mostly flat except the last 10 minutes to reach the top. It was definitely worth it!

The climb up to this rock was a bit more challenging compared to the rest of the Shiratani hike. We hiked up in December, perfect weather and timing as there were hardly anyone else around and me and my husband could enjoy the rock to...More

The view from the top was definitely worth the hike, which becomes more difficult right before the rock. Many people tend to go to the top and sit there. Although eating on the rock is not allowed, many people will still sit around for a...More

When I finally reached Taiko iwa Rock I simply couldn't believe my eyes. After few hour long hike in a depths of old forest all of the sudden I saw an amazing view on mountains and valleys around... it's not possible to describe. Unforgettable experience.
