Dont solo travel here for comfort
Sep 2021 • Solo
The walk down was fine although quite far but once down it started. I was teaveling alone and wanted a bed. There were plenty empty. But since i was alone i was pointed towards the farthest back corner and there the attemdant put up a bed with a umbrella. Squished behind the other double beds. It was only 5 euros. I offered 10 to compensate but no. And the beds were rickety and uncomfortable also. Moving the bed to any of the alternative empty spots was also a no. Very unfriendly and i said so. I then sat on the wide open beach near the cliff for shade which was fine. But the beach is very stony/pebbly so hard to lie on. Not a good welcome. The calahone and carabelo beaches are much nicer and friendlier for solo travelers.

Wrong choice of beach
Sep 2020
We normally go to Catarijan beach, which is a few kms further towards Granada and are always very happy to do so, but we heard quite a lot of people talking about this beach, so we decided to check it out.
The beach itself is not bad; the pristine waters are great for snorkelling and there is a kayak hire for trips to the waterfalls and caves, but there are quite a few problems with this beach. To access, you need to walk several kms downhill (and back up again, of course), so you need to time your visit carefully. We saw that the beach had sun beds and a beach bar, so we decided to travel light. Unfortunately, the sun beds on the beach were possibly the worst I have ever used... They were located on a slope (!) and to top it all up, they had decided to cover the mattresses in hard plastic, supposedly to be able to disinfect them better. Well, judging by the grime and sand accumulated on the badly torn plastic, they had wrapped them up some time during the great flu pandemic of 1918. So we spent most of the day trying not to slide off and end up in the dirty sand littered with butt ends and litter.
The beach bar turned out to be very basic, just sandwiches and cold drinks and nowhere to sit (due to the pandemic, we were told, although all other beach bars in Spain have a seating area). The guy preparing the food was using his mask as a support for his beard and was not wearing gloves or showing any other sign of respecting the precautions, so our appetite went out of the window fast. To top it all up, at around 14.00, they started to blast the most dreadful techno music from some massive speakers, so having a siesta was out of the question. In any case, the beach is absolutely packed, even in September and the general atmosphere is that of a rowdy family gathering.
My snorkelling was cut short by a bank of jelly-fish, but that's nobody's fault (well, it is, but let's not get involved in environmental discussions here). Take us back Catarijan, all is forgiven.

Fabulous day out
Oct 2019 • Family
We had a fabulous day out here.
I booked in advance a kayak for my partner and child, this cost me about 40€ for the three of us.
Lovely day out Kayaking. If your looking for a beautiful sandy, easily accessible beach then this isn't the beach for you. The sand is kinda rocky and there is a steep hill to get down (no buses go near it.

So in the morning we got the bus from nerja bus station to the cueves. Then it was about a 45 min walk to Maro Beach (that's with a 6 year old) over the foot bridge from the cueves.
It's quite a steep walk down to just bear that in mind. You can drive to near the bottom but we didn't have a car. We got to the beach in good time to change into our swimming suits get our kayak (we did a guided tour with Lola, who was fab!). Our guided tour in our kayak lasted a little over two hours and I can't recommend it enough. It was great!! (We booked with KayakMaro)
After we got changed back into dry clothes. Just bear in mind that this beach is quite hard to reach so the facility's are beach level. The toilet door didn't lock and there was no loo roll so just take some tissues. There was also a small cafe that did lunch food and ice-cream. We got three ice-cream and all together it was 8€.
Once we were all sorted we walked back up witch was more tough as it's all uphill hut we have brought snacks so it was okay. We walked to the Maro roundabout and got a bus back to nerja.
We loved our day!

It was a cloudy day but still warm, the beach was packed, which is fine, but the parking (they charge)is a diabolical nightmare with roads closed and a free for all, which is what you could do walking the 10 -15 mins down a very steep hill to get to the beach. Never mind your return journey.
The beach is very pebbly, make sure you have protective shoes, water wasn’t very clear and there are much nicer beaches in the Nerja/Torrox area that are far more accessible and pleasant.
I wouldn’t return to this beach again.

Stayed 1 hour- awful!
Aug 2019 • Couples
Long painful walk to a beach with dirty sand, dirty sunbeds, smelt of sewers, lots of fly's, disgusting toilets (although I could have gotten over this as no beach has particularly nice toilets), snack bar dirty - waiters t shirt was filthy which made me questions the hygiene. Don't waste your time.

The beach is alright, not better than ant id the others in the area. A big pain with parking, be there EARLY orherweise you can be forced to walk a long way. BUT the big problem is the (called) restaurant. So unpleasant staff. We ordered simple food. One tuna sandwish, one hamburger and one baguette. After 30 minutes, our order was gone. We ordered again and it took 45 minutes! So totally 1 hour 15 minutes!!!!! And the hamburger was not cooked!!!! No excuase, nothing. We were VERY upset. We just left and we did not pay the icetea we had had. /Jane, Sweden

Playa de la Caleta/not worth it
Jun 2019 • Family
Visited Maro and wanted to go see the Cascada de Maro which it seems it can be only seem from kayak. We found a sign towards the playa de la Caleta. It's a narrow road and a lot of steps going down to the beach. The beach seemed small and intimate, but water was cold, not great for swimming and there are lots of tents here and there (people staying on the beach). It's not worth the effort!

Not keen
May 2019 • Couples
This is a nice beach but not one we visit very often. That’s nothing to do with the quality of the sand or sea but entirely to do with the parking.

A very narrow road winds its way down to the beach which is fine when it is a quieter time. It becomes a nightmare though when it is busy cars are parked at all angles along with narrow road and you may not even find a space.

We just choose to go elsewhere and keep our car in one piece!

Dark side of Spain
Oct 2018 • Friends
We were robbed at this beach. Car parking is up a steep hill not in view of the beach. 4 cars were broken into. Other friends were also robbed here on another occasion. Police reports were made on all of these robberies. The water had jellyfish, children were stung. The food in the chiringuito is really good local seafood, with unfriendly service. This could be a good spot but instead you get treated like a tourist even if you are not one. This is a place where you discover the dark side of Spain.
