Beautiful
Sep 2021 • Friends
A beautiful place which gives panoramic views of the island. Cycle to the top is short and steep but worth it. Beautiful 17th century Church. Petra is about 5k away and is also good spot for lunch

Quiet and tranquil
Feb 2020
Set on top of the mountain surrounded by lush vegetation this place is a real oasis of retreat. It is definitely a place to relax and pray.

I was there on February 21 an I was not very lucky, there was a school day trip, loud kids running all over the place, not inside the church though. At least they had the respect to stay away from that but they tormented the quiet grounds.

However, this is still a 5-star review from me, it could have been perfect under different circumstances but this is not the Sanctuary's fault.

My place of peacefulness
Jan 2018
I have been very fortunate in that I have travelled to many places and have lots of wonderful memories. I have written numerous reviews which I like to think have helped my fellow travellers.

On reflection there is one place that I visited which I should have reviewed but didn't. I would like to rectify that ommision in 2018.

I turn back the hands of time until 2012. The place Mallorca and the small village of Petra.

A short drive or about an hours walk from the village is a steady climb to the top of a hill. A reasonably fit person would have no trouble in walking to the summit. At the top of this hill is a stunning 360 degree panoramic view of the surrounding countryside as well as the village we had just recently left.

Also, at the sumit is the reason for our visit and for my unforgetable memory of my visit.

Let me introduce you to the - Sanctuaire Et Emitage de Bonany de Petra - It is an imposing building large in size and probably simalar in design to many other religious buildings on the Island of Mallorca, but to me special.

In years gone by it was the home to several priests. Nowdays it has a souvenir kiosk which is open at certain times and basic accomodation, cold showers and toilets. No restaurant facilities.

You walk up to the Sanctuaire by passing through an entrance gateway. The concrete pillars either side of the gateway have Mallorcan tiles with religious motifes perculiar to this site.

It is said that prior to 1609 the people of Petra were suffering from a severe drought. The crops were withered and times were hard.

In order to overcome their difficulties they prayed that the rains would come and their plight would be aleviated.
The rain did come and their plight was aleviated.

The building of the Sanctuaire was their way of giving thanks for the rain they were blessed
with.
Even today hundreds of years later, the villagers each year hold a thanks giving at the Sanctuaire.

Having passed through the gate way we walked to the main entrance of the Sanctuaire.

The view as you entered was toward the Altar. It was imposing to say the least. The decoration and icons were in my view superb. You could even walk behind the Altar erea and look in to the body of the chapel. It was impressive.

The Chapel was beautifully adorned with religious paintings and smaller side alcoves of particular significance.

The sight that left a lasting impression on me, was on either side of the altar. Positioned were two stained glass windows. Now the afternoon I visited the sun was streaming through these windows. The resultant kaledoscope of colors which were reflected into the Chapel were stunning. In my view the rays of Heaven had truely touched the Sanctuaire that day. I felt at peace.

Now I am not an overly religious person but of all the Religious edifices I have visited The Sanctuaire Et Emitage de Bonay de Petra has a special place in my heart.

I can truely recommend a visit to this place of worship.

Monastery and impressive landscape
Dec 2017 • Friends
We have crossed all Petra town(and we got lost...some times...) in order to arrive to the top of the little mountain where is located the monastery. The town, the cropland, the traditional town houses and the manor houses in the surroundings are amazing. We had a feeling of serenity. Impressive landscape from the top, being able to see the sea, the Malloca plain and the mountain ranges of the island (Tramuntana, Llevant)

What a view
May 2016 • Friends
We cycled up to the monastery and the view was worth every ache and pain to make it to the top. Not far out of Petra, it's worth the effort to reach the peak and enjoy the stunning 360 degree views of Majorca

A big hermitage located at top of a little mountain with a beautiful views of the island
Feb 2016 • Family
Ermita de Bonany is an hermitage called "Good Year" in English and it is located in Puig de Bonany (Good Year Hill), near the Little town of Petra. You can come here by car or by walk (a good excursión), as you prefer. The hermitage is big and robust (as the typical religious building in Mallorca) and you can enter and see inside. For me the best part is the surroundings of the hermitage: the building is very good and the views of Petra and surroundings are fantastic, especially if you go here in a sunny day!

The views - wow!
Apr 2015 • Family
A short drive up a twisty road from Petra takes you to a fantastic view point and church. The views are panoramic and well worth the trip. The architecture of the church is interesting and inside is very interesting. There is a toilet but would be even better if there was a cafe like the church at the top the hill in Arta has. Having said that there is a vending machine, but a cafe and tables to admire the view would be perfect!

Good views

Apart from the scenic views, there's not much to see inside the ermitage. Not worth if you are on a short visit.
