About
Gibellina nuova is the biggest contemporary outdoor work of art in the world, with an extraordinary collection of works by important artists such as Carla Accardi who created the panels in ceramics Senza titolo - untitled (1987-1988), situated under the colonnade of the town hall, Nino Mustica, creator of a Fontana - Fountain, or Mimmo Rotella, creator of the Omaggio a Tommaso Campanella - Homage to Tommaso Campanella. The Fontana in travertine marble is by Andrea Cascella which, like all the sculptures along the roads in Gibellina, is a reference point from which to get one's bearings in the streets of the butterfly shaped urban layout of the town.

Missed opportunity. The works of art are scattered throughout the city but undervalued. In addition, they are abandoned and in many cases not even finished. The cretto of butters is not easily accessible and also subject to neglect. Peccato!!!

A solitary village in the middle of nowhere. No people around... I met a thirsty dog in a square, I gave him some water...... Just a little bar was open and I had a Coca cola. The village is an oper-air museum, something different, anyway worth a visit.

The "Dream in progress",the name of the project given of the new town "Gibellina Nuova" built 18 km away from the old Gibellina destroyed by the 1968 earthquake seems to have been only a dream.
When I visited on a rainy day this town,I felt a kind of sadness hanging over and in the city because of its wide empty streets, some of its weird constructions are already crumbling, its two-story dwellings are faded and I didn't see people congregating and chating...

What an amazing experience driving and walking around this new town, which feels somewhat abandoned and run down, when you think it’s not that old at all. The monumental works of art are everywhere, some crumbling away, grasses and small shrubs growing in the pavements, dried up fountains, empty streets. It’s like a film set. There are cars around but still you barely see anyone there. No obvious cafes or restaurants to buy something, just very strange.
Like an utopian dream for a new town gone bad.
Still it’s fascinating, great eerie photos, you feel like you want to get involved, ask people to help clean up their streets, repair things, finish building the town. I loved it. But weird, definitely one if you’re looking for something quirky.

Last night, returning to Alcamo, we stopped in Gibellina Nuova, together with Martina and Vincenzo Dormiente. It was an intense moment, a visit full of emotion and history. This city, resurrected from the rubble of the 1968 earthquake, has become an extraordinary open-air museum, a unique place that owes its soul to Senator Ludovico Corrao. A visionary and defender of rights, Corrao not only marked a cultural and legislative turning point in Italy, supporting figures such as Franca Viola and contributing to the abolition of restorative marriage, but also gave new life to the Belice, transforming it into one of the most emblematic places of artistic rebirth.

In Gibellina Nuova there are works by some of the greatest contemporary artists and architects, who responded to Corrao’s call to create a collective work of beauty and resilience. In addition to the famous “Stella” by Pietro Consagra, symbol of the city, we admired the Grande Cretto by Alberto Burri, which covers the ruins of the old Gibellina as a memorial, and the installations by Mimmo Paladino and Carla Accardi, which add depth and color to this surreal landscape.

Other artists who have left an indelible mark on Gibellina include Arnaldo Pomodoro, with his sculptures that seem to sculpt the space itself, and Franco Angeli, whose aesthetic blends perfectly with the architecture of the place. The contribution of Emilio Isgrò, with his erasure works, invites reflection on the meaning of memory and loss, while Mario Schifano has given the city one of his most intense murals, capturing the sense of transformation and rebirth.

The architecture of Gibellina Nuova is equally iconic. Vittorio Gregotti designed the Teatro di Gibellina, a symbolic space of aggregation and culture, while Alessandro Mendini created the Madre church, characterized by an imposing and symbolic geometric structure, a spiritual tribute to the strength of a community that has never given up.

Yet, visiting this extraordinary open-air museum, it is impossible not to feel a sense of emptiness. Gibellina deserves a greater vitality, a care that allows it to be rediscovered and enhanced as it deserves. It is a shame to see it so silent, when it could offer the world the best of Italian art, architecture and culture. Gibellina Nuova is not just a place, but an experience, a reminder of beauty and resilience. And thanks to Ludovico Corrao and the artists who made it unique, it is a heritage that belongs to all of us.

One of the greatest places ever! A surprise that Italy, in art, is still so very much alive. we forget that when we are moving from one antiquity to the other. Gibellina was 'found' by us completely unexpected...we didn't know anything about it but liked the name so we veered off the path of antiquities. This is a town created from 'ashes' with the sprit of Tomorrow, of Survival, of looking at the road ahead and a museum, indoor and the town itself that must now be missed if you visit Sicilia! For us this was a breath taking surprise for which we are eternally grateful!

For m,e this was the highlight of my holiday the most amazing place in Sicily, both for the artwork in the new town Gibellina Nuova and the unique concrete spectacle of the old town Gibellina Vecchia, aka Ruderi di Gibellina. It's some way from the main cities but not too hard to get to. There are a couple of trains each day from Palermo (take the airport train first, then change at Piraineto for the smaller train to Salemi-Gibellina).
Contact Daniele from GibelTransfer - he has a very reasonably priced big red minibus to take you up to the old town (about 11km away) and also around the sculptures in the new town. He's extremely knowledgeable and enthusiastic, and speaks good English - you'll enjoy it and learn a lot!

The town of Gibellina is truly a surprise. As you enter the town from the highway there is a huge  star installation (Stella), you will know you have arrived to Europes largest permanent outdoor Art installation, the artist and architects works are well known and have contributed as gifts to rebuild the town. There are lots of huge installation all around the town, you will see interesting architecture built in the 80’s, mosaics and sculptures, in fact in almost every place you will see some art. The city was destroyed by an earthquake in 1968, instead of rebuilding it with remnants of the old buildings it was relocated 11km away, rebuilt by artist and architects to reconstruct and rebuild from scratch so that the town would not  disappear like so many others in Sicily.
