About
The “Trame del Mediterraneo” Museum in Gibellina represents an original interpretation of the Mediterranean cultural history. Creative contributions from the Middle East arrived in Spain and then in France through North Africa. At the same time, they left traces in Sicily (Italy) in both the visual arts and the material culture, enriched over time by the imagination of individuals and from the traces of a collective daily living. The Museum, founded in 1996 by Ludovico Corrao, is the result of years of research and purchases, and of meetings, debates, studies and seminars sponsored by the Orestiadi Foundation. It expresses an underlying idea, whose strength lies in its transnational and interdisciplinary character. The Museum is an unprecedented exhibition model, since it selects and displays paintings and artworks which are the materialization not only of various forms of artistic languages but also of aspects of everyday life, ranging from symbolic expressions in ritual dresses to e

The museum site (at the Baglio di Santo Stefano in Gibellina) is beautiful in itself. The ancient/contemporary mix is successful. The collection which embraces the cultures of the countries overlooking the Mediterranean is evocative. There are contemporary works of great artistic value (an artist for all: Domenico Paladino). However, everything is suffering from the signs of time and there is a bit of neglect here and there in the layout. The road to reach the site (at least one of the two) is rather bad. Small things that on the one hand make me invite the management/management to make another small effort (I imagine it is not at all simple!) for the valorization of this museum; and on the other hand they make me suggest everyone to visit it (while I was there, there were maybe 6 of us, and it deserves much more).

Spectacular collection of Mediterranean works of art. Everything OK!
Welcoming staff, famous artists who have made their notable contribution. The Museum is equipping itself to accommodate people with disabilities on the upper floor too. The Baglio granary is full of contemporary works of art and can be visited to the sound of carefully chosen music

Very interesting museum with attention to detail that harmoniously combines different cultures, materials, artistic expressions. Beautiful also the music that acts as a sound carpet at the granaries exhibition. Staff very welcoming and available to give explanations. Super!

... a bit run down.
And of course Mimmo Paladino's horses are impressive.
But a lot of it seems improvised and carelessly arranged.
A huge area that could be used much better to make art accessible
I found the orchard the most beautiful.
The entrance fee of €6 is OK. Unfortunately there is no cafeteria to linger in.

This museum is open despite Tripadvisor saying it is temporarily closed. We had trouble finding it because I underestimated how far out of the town of Gibellina Nuova it is - half a mile down a country lane off a road to the east of the town - but it is worth it. I agree with JABSuffolk's review from nearly 18 months ago: the contents of three galleries in two buildings on the site are an unexpected (pleasant) surprise. There are decorated doors, costumes, paintings and various items from different cultures that have controlled Sicily at different times, including Arabic. If you like history and culture, it's only 10 minutes or so off the A29 autostrada (motorway) if you get your directions right!

This is a little known museum, with spectacualr displays and unusual themes. The juxtapositioning of unrelated objectsmakes it particularly interesting. Well worth a detour

As an imaginary city, Gibellina, both old and new, is unbeatable. Spend a couple of days in this surrealist dream and it will change you. One may argue that it is a spectacular failure, but spectacular it is and that's what matters for the pilgrim/visitor. The exquisite "Museo delle Trame Mediterranee", where you will almost certainly be the only visitor, is the jewel of Gibellina's crown. A place of delicate, luminous beauty.

While visiting Gibellina one can not leave without a visit to the museum (museo delle Trame del mediterraneo) The huge outdoor installation by Mimmo Paladino, La montagna di sale, (Mountain of salt) really gives you a sense of what kind of tragedy was caused by the earthquake, not only for humans but also for the animals who lived on the land. The salt was brought over from the salt mines of Trapani.
Here at the museum you can see some very interesting modern Art, one section of the museum show you the link of the artefacts from the historical past and the modern day Gibbellina, clothing, pottery, weapon, tiles and more. The other section has many interesting installations. The sense I got here was that these kind of works would be found in the Tate modern or the MOMA, a very nice surprise to find such treasure in a this modest little museum.

The different cultures and religions of the Mediterranean peoples are thus embraced through the works of Italian artists. It makes us all feel part of the same humanity.

Beautiful! Seeing Mimmo Paladino's mountain of salt is an experience that no photograph or documentary can remotely come close to.
