Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

We enjoy a good zoo where animals appear content with adequate enclosures and enrichment programmes, unfortunately that's not the situation here. The enclosures are fairly small, many animals seem rather bored and some lack company. All in all, it's a bit sad compared with many zoos we have visited in recent years. Porto has three zoos, and I'm not sure the other two are any better. It might be an idea to build a new zoo for the 21st century and improve these animals' lives.

My wife and I were looking for a zoo in the Porto area. There are apparently several smaller facilities scattered about the area but no larger main zoo. We had picked a place in Gaia which sounded good but we had no car and it wasn't clear to us that the bus ran on the weekend. But we found this one in the Maia area which was easy to get to. Just a ten minute walk from a Metro station.

When approaching the Maia zoo, the entrance is quite unassuming. It's just a gate that shared with a restaurant. My wife though we were in the wrong place but I saw the little ticket booth. (Note: we were there in mid-November on a rainy day so we were almost the only visitors at the time.) It looked quite small at first but we were pleasantly surprised.

There is a quite large reptile house which is upstairs in the main building. The zoo grounds go around the main building to the left and then also down a hill to larger animals including lion, tigers, and zebra. So it turned out to be much larger than it initially looked.

I'm rating this with four dots, but it's difficult to rate without explanation. Despite it being larger than initially thought, it's still not a large zoo. It's quite small compared with the Lisbon Zoo. But you can get quite close to many of the animals and if you love animals, you can spend quite a bit of time here. We spent a couple of hours but that's much longer than most people will take. So for what it is (not comparing it to other zoos) I think it's worth four dots.

It is quite small, but I wasn't expecting much. It is located in a nice place. You can see everything in an hour, but the tickets are not expensive at all. There is a nice reptile house and a weird room with some skeletons. It is easy to access this zoo. There is another zoo near Porto (much bigger), but it is almost impossible to get there with public transport, so I chose this one instead.

Zoo's understandably make me a little sad. Animals shouldn't be kept in captivity. These animals seem to be well taken care of, the buildings are nice and the zoo itself is small but cute!!

Nice place inside the city center. Great for kids to see different animals and be close with a sea lion in the show

We spent a wonderful few hours at the Maia Zoo. It’s a small one, but my 3 year old enjoyed seeing the animals so close.

The staff were super friendly, played with my toddler, took the time to tell us about the animals. Most spoke English well, but those that weren’t fluent made an effort to understand and help out. We felt very welcome.

Lunch at the local cafe was also nice, the little one really enjoyed his bolognaise. Overall - a very pleasant family morning.

This a good place to visit, nice and small.

A lot of different activities, and with new areas also.

I know this place for more than 30 years, and it's always a pleasure to return and see some changes...

The zoo is approximately a 10-15 walk from Parque Maia Metro Station. Entry for an adult was 7.50€ (in October 2017). The zoo is ‘smallish’ compared to some zoos. Although we still walked around the site in 2.5 hours. In my opinion, the zoo itself has a lot of well kept animals, which are all in good enclosures, especially the larger animals. On the day we arrived there was a bird exhibit at 2:30pm and a seal exhibit at 5:30pm. There is a Cafe on site also. Definitely worth a visit to this zoo.

A very fine way to use your time in Maia.
It shows the effort put in a project and the outcome of these people's gift.
