Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

There are usually not many people in this little and specialized museum. This is the rule and this may explain why it's so easy to wander around in the Rixheim museum. If you're around Mulhouse, stop and visit to admire the extraordinary paintings they display. Most of them are coming from a very small number of artists born or having worked in Rixheim, but they were amazing, truly able to describe the world with their wood plates.

Le Musée du Papier Peint (wall paper museum) gives an enticing overview of the history wallpaper. This museum IS worth a detour - for sure.

On the ground floor you can see the production process (first manually and later using machines). In summer time, the museum demonstrates the process. When we were there, a school class printed their own pieces of wallpaper - they were so focused on it.

The first floor shows wallpaper samples from the 18th century to modern days.

The second floor is THE surprise: 11 rooms with panoramic wallpaper designs are installed here. We discovered landscapes of Switzerland (Bernese Alps, Matterhorn, Lake of Brienz - all next to one another), landscapes of India, of Brazil, the most beautiful spots on the earth (among them again Switzerland, next to Italy and the Arctic with polo bears and icebergs. Full of fantasy! We could not get enough discovering new aspects of our world.

I have to add - I had visited the Musée du Papier Peint around 1983 (just after it foundation) - and I still remembered those panoramic wall paper installations... they ARE impressive.

The museum is at about half an hour away from Basel. Take the motorway to Mulhouse and follow the signs to Rixheim - there are signs to the museums next to the town hall. Note that the museum is open from ten and in the afternoon and closes over lunch time.

I will surely not wait for another 30 years to come back. I would like to see the demonstration of the production process. And I told my nephew that he should go there with his children - he is school teacher, and I am sure they will enjoy it a lot.

The collection is beautiful but not so much interesting.
It should be more playful to interest kids and none expert people.

I never thought I would enjoy a wallpaper museum, but a short visit here was very interesting. The no photographs rule seems to have been broken by other reviewers here. There are whole rooms of panoramic prints, and many samples of paper. There are examples of printing machines, which I think wwere copies, but my French wasn't up to getting a full understanding of the visit.

Hi! Thank you for the review! The machines presented were used to produce wallpapers in Rixheim. The only exception is the Paper machine (the green one). Feel free to ask questions in english when you visit next time! :)

Only a small museum, tucked in the courtyard at the town hall, but there is plenty to view. Not all the exhibits have descriptions in English, but most are fairly self explanatory and it is possible to follow the video presentations, even if your French is very basic.

Personally think the most impressive exhibits are the panoramics made up of sections of hand printed paper. There are some very modern examples as well as some very old ones, all of which are worth a look.

There is a free car park close by, behind the Post Office and the fee for the museum is low too, making a trip here inexpensive. They close at lunchtime, so best to check their opening hours before going, to avoid disappointment.

Tired of nothing but art museums and such. This is fascinating and easy to get too on a city bus from Mulhouse. Wallpaper from mid 1700's to modern. Well displayed. Also exhibits on how it was and is made now. Definitely worth the trouble to find. Closed over lunch hour so plan accordingly.

This museum tells the history of wall-paper manufacture. The small building is located in the courtyard of the Rixheim municipality and has pretty limited opening hours. The ground floor is devoted to the machinery used in manufacturing wall-paper while the top floor contains a fascinating exhbition of wall-papers produced in nearly two centuries. Well worth an hour's visit.

A different type of museum combining decorative arts with functional art. Located in a wall paper processing plant. Local town is also nice to walk around. Unique.
