It was so much larger than we ever could have imagined and it must have been hell to be a prisoner here during the cold months. Take your time and enjoy the walk immensely.

Fantastic fort with great view of the coastline. You can easily walk around and get a great grasp of its history without taking a guided tour. I recommend buying a booklet for 20 kr with additional information about the rooms and the prisoners. The hill...More

We had an awesome tour guide who gave a first class tour. Wonderful stories about the prisoners who built the fortress and living within the walls. Lovely views from the top.

The old castle holds a mysterium and do take a guided walk to hear all the stories from long ago. You will not leave the castle without hearing about "Lasse Maja" the man who dressed as a woman and robbed people. He even got married...More

Amazingly, the day we visited Carlstens Fortress, was the day re-enactors did theatrical accounts of the fortress's history and infamous residents: with tales of gun shootings, canons, hangings, suicide and infamous criminals. It was a wet, gray day, which did not cheer the fortress whatsoever....More

My wife, son, and I took a tram, train, bus, and ferry from Gothenburg to arrive at the Carlstens fortress....about an hour in total to arrive in a beautiful traditional island village where one can visit the fortress. After a short walk up the hill...More

The fortress is difficult to miss on the island. Its tower looms over wherever you are. Although built as a defense structure, it only saw some actions in two occasions in the 17th century and was mostly used as a prison. The visit was surprisingly...More

Spend a couple of interesting hours at Carlstens Fastning in Marstrand. Historically interesting, well preserved and a first class guided tour. Lots to see and do both indoors and outdoors. There is even a hotel in the castle, Soldatens Hotel.

This was my second visit to this place and it's a fascinating part of the Swedish heritage. I recommend to book a guided tour. The site isn't well displayed so it's hard to know what you actually see if you don't have a guide, but...More
