We visited Udo Jingu in May. There's some great scenery on the way to and from if taking the coastal road. We learned the hard way to drive past bus parking area and take a narrow (often 1.5 cars wide) further south that leads to...More

With an impressive coast leading to Udo Shrine - take Route 220, and be sure to sideswipe to the Horikiri Pass - the drive to Udo is almost as impressive as the temple itself. Lined with cafes and trinket stalls along the steps towards Udo,...More

A popular local shire/temple right next to the rock on the beach, great view of the waves pounding on the rock, quite a few steps to climb but easy steps.

In this shrine, you are asked to throw a tiny stone into a small pool. your wish would come truth if you are able to do so. So, try your luck!

We really enjoyed visiting this shrine because of its beautiful setting. There are buildings, an entrance gate, and many statues along the path to a bridge and stairs down to the grotto where the highlighted temple area is located. There was a parking lot with...More

I went to this shrine from Kagoshima. It's a 2-hour train ride to Miyazaki and then a 90-minute bus ride to the shrine. The bus is one per hour so make sure you time yourself accordingly. Foreigners can get a 1-day bus pass for 1000...More

The Udo Shrine is considered a sacred shrine. It is located in a grotto said to be made by wave action. You get there on a one lane road carved along the sea. It is beautifully situated with the crashing sea just below it. Reaching...More
