This is a beautiful outdoor onsen bathing in naturally hot and sulfuric water flowing from the mountain in a very picturesque setting. Very relaxing.

This place used to be beautiful naturally. Now they have built tunnels in full view in order to hide the men's section . This totally destroy the ambience of the place. Such a pity because the onsen is in such a beautiful natural location, surrounded...More

Lovely place for a few days, very low key/relaxing. Wonderful bathing onsen options around town for post walk relaxation and enough decent hotels and restaurants to make for a pleasant few days. For the less physically demanding visit you can take cables all the way...More

Zao onsen is a small town, with maddeningly, flowing hot spring water everywhere. Best to ask the tourist information for a map to go to the most picturesque onsen. It's about 20 minutes or more to get there, and you can soak your sores away....More

The Hotsprings in December was amazing! The place was covered in white snow, with regular snow fall providing a constant cover of white powder. The location is about 3 hours from Tokyo via bullet train (11k Yen one way), which is an experience in itself....More
