Easy enough to pass through the border. Exit Thailand. Get a ticket for a bus to drive you across. Get on the bus. Drive across. Enter Laos. Simples

Drove through the bridge while crossing the border to Laos. Nothing special to see. The border crossing was ok, some organizing would make it faster but oh well.. at least they have a small kiosk with snacks.

Our attempts to view this bridge, supposedly built with partly Australian donated funds, was frustrated by the border check point to Laos approximately 5 Km before the bridge. Unless leaving Thailand and going to Laos, we could proceed no further. Not possible to get close...More

หัวเรื่องเป็นท่อนนึงจากเพลง Singin' in The Blues ของ Connie Francis ผู้เขียนคลุกคลีกับสะพานแห่งนี้ตั้งแต่ ก.ไก่ เลยล่ะครับ ฝั่งไทยเป็นทุ่งนา ฝั่งลาวเป็นไร่ข้าวโพด ไปๆมาๆ 2-3 เดือน แล้วก็มาเป็นชาวเชียงของอยู่ร่วมๆ 3 ปี จนสะพานเสร็จ ทำให้การคมนาคมระหว่าง ไทย-ลาว-จีนสะดวกมาก Tourist จากจีนมาเที่ยวเชียงใหม่โดยผ่านทางนี้มาก เป็นเพราะอิทธิพลของภาพยนตร์จีนเรื่อง Lost In Thailand ทำไมถึงทำกับฉันได้ Why Did You Do Me This Way? ก่อนมีสะพาน เชียงของจะคึกคักมาก โดยเฉพาะฤดูหนาว มีนักท่องเที่ยวไทย-เทศมากันมาก การข้ามไปมาไทย-ลาวก็ต้องทำเอกสารและนั่งเรือหางยาวจากท่าเรือบั๊กในเมือง แต่เมื่อมีสะพานแล้ว เมืองเชียงของก็แทบจะหมดความหมาย ถึงกับ Singin'...More

You exit Thailand through efficient passport control then take a bus across the bridge to the Lao border post. This looked a bit chaotic but in facct worked well. Money change and snack bar.

I think what you have been told is correct. You CERTAINLY cannot cross on foot.... 9.30 seems awfully late and rather risky though officially it is open until 10pm Good luck!...I'd not try it......
